5 Minute Tasks for a Clean Home
How 5-Minute Tasks Help Me Keep a Smooth-Running Home Without Feeling Overwhelmed
With the kids back in school and the holidays quickly approaching, this is one of those times of year when life seems to speed up overnight.
Between school schedules, sports, appointments, work, meals, cleaning, DIY projects, and all of the everyday things that come with taking care of a home, my to-do list can get long very quickly.
And when I look at everything that needs to be done all at once? It can feel overwhelming.
Over the years, however, I’ve found a simple mindset that has made a huge difference in how I approach my everyday household tasks:
I think of them as 5-minute tasks.
Instead of looking at the entire house and thinking, I need to clean all of this, I look for one small thing I can accomplish in about five minutes.
Five minutes feels manageable.
And you’d be surprised how much you can actually accomplish in that amount of time!
Why I Love the 5-Minute Task Method
One of the biggest things I’ve learned about keeping our home running smoothly is that I don’t necessarily need huge blocks of time to get things done.
Sometimes I just need five minutes.
At night, there are several small things I like to take care of before going to bed. If I were to lump them all together and think, I need to clean the entire downstairs before I go to sleep, I probably wouldn’t want to do any of it!
Instead, I break everything down.
Straightening the couches and putting the cushions back in place? Five minutes.

Straightening the dining room table and putting the runner and decorative pieces back where they belong? Five minutes.
Walking through the main living areas and returning misplaced items to their proper rooms? Five minutes.
Clearing and wiping down the kitchen countertops? Five minutes.
When I approach each job individually, none of them feels particularly difficult.
It’s no longer a giant evening cleaning session. It’s just a handful of little jobs I can knock out quickly.
And perhaps the best part is what happens the following morning.
My Evening 5-Minute Tasks Make My Mornings Better
I love having a slower morning whenever possible. I like having my coffee, eating breakfast, and spending a little time with my two youngest daughters before getting into everything I need to accomplish that day.
Taking a few minutes the night before helps make those mornings possible.
There is something so nice about walking into the living room and seeing the pillows straightened.
Or coming into the kitchen and seeing clean countertops instead of yesterday’s clutter.
Those little things immediately make the house feel calmer.
More importantly, I’m not starting my day already behind.
Instead of waking up thinking about everything I didn’t finish yesterday, I can move on to what actually needs my attention today.
That’s really the goal behind so many of the routines I’ve created for our home. I’m not trying to have a perfectly clean house every second of the day. I’m trying to create little systems that prevent everyday responsibilities from becoming overwhelming.
I Use 5-Minute Tasks in the Morning Too
The same idea works in the morning.
One of my favorite morning 5-minute tasks is actually outside.
I like to quickly clean our front entrance almost every day. Since we live further out in the country, we deal with bugs, dust, leaves, and all sorts of things making their way onto the porch.
But it doesn’t require a huge porch-cleaning day.
I simply grab the blower or a broom, spend about five minutes cleaning everything off, and I’m done.
Our entrance looks tidy, I’m ready for deliveries or unexpected visitors, and I can move on with my day.
Another morning task is emptying the dishwasher.
I run the dishwasher at night after dinner, and then in the morning I empty it. Again, this is something that only takes a few minutes, but it sets up my kitchen for the entire day.
And that’s really the point.
Five minutes now can save me frustration later.
The Secret Is Not Waiting Until Everything Needs to Be Done
I think this is where household tasks can sometimes become overwhelming.
We see the entire kitchen instead of the countertop.
We see the entire living room instead of the couch.
We see the whole pantry instead of one shelf.
And suddenly what could have been a five-minute job feels like an hour-long project.
I’ve found that doing small things consistently helps prevent them from turning into much bigger jobs later.
If I straighten the couch tonight, I don’t need to worry about it tomorrow.
If I wipe the counters after I’ve cleared them, I’m not waking up to yesterday’s mess.
If I empty the dishwasher in the morning, dirty dishes have somewhere to go throughout the day.
Each individual task may seem insignificant, but together they create a home that feels much easier to manage.
I Also Try to Remove Unnecessary Tasks
Another important part of keeping our household running smoothly is recognizing that I don’t have to personally spend time on everything.
For example, grocery delivery has become a huge time saver for me.
Since we live farther away from stores now, running errands can take quite a bit of time. Having our weekly groceries delivered saves me the drive, the gas, the time spent walking through the store—and, let’s be real, it also prevents some of those impulse purchases that mysteriously find their way into the cart!
I also try to keep our pantry stocked with the staples we use regularly. I usually place our grocery order once a week so that I know we have what we need for meals throughout the week.
This is another lesson I’ve learned:
Running a home efficiently isn’t always about learning how to do more. Sometimes it’s about finding ways to remove things from your to-do list altogether.
Make the Things You Need Easy to See
I’ve also learned that organization needs to be practical for the way you live.
For me, visibility is incredibly helpful.
I love using glass containers in the kitchen, not only because they’re beautiful, but because I can immediately see when we’re running low on something.
| Breadbox |
The same goes for pantry items and spices. I keep overflow spices together so I can quickly check what we already have before adding something to the next grocery order.
It’s a small system, but that’s exactly why it works.
I don’t have to remember everything.
My home helps remind me.
Having the Right Tools Makes Quick Tasks Even Quicker
Another thing I’ve come to appreciate is having the right tools available when I need them.
When something spills, gets dirty, or—if you have creative children like I do—someone decides an unexpected surface would make a wonderful canvas, I don’t want to spend 20 minutes searching for the right cleaning product.
Having my most-used cleaning tools available makes those little household emergencies much less stressful.
I’ve also found tools that help me clean our floors more quickly and efficiently because I simply don’t want to spend an enormous amount of time cleaning floors when there are so many other things I’d rather be doing.
The goal isn’t to become someone who spends all day maintaining her home.
The goal is to maintain the home efficiently so I have more time to actually enjoy it.
The 5-Minute Rule Is Especially Helpful Before the Holidays
As we head into the holiday season, this mindset becomes even more important for me.
There will be decorating.
| Drapes |
There will be DIY projects.
There will be cooking, gatherings, school activities, shopping, and all of the extra things that seem to appear on our calendars this time of year.
I’m also reorganizing our seasonal decorations so they’re easier to find. I like separating everything into clear bins according to the holiday or season so I can see what’s inside and grab exactly what I need.
Again, I’m looking for ways to make future tasks easier.
Because I’ve realized that a smooth-running home isn’t created by one giant organizing weekend.
It’s created by small systems and little habits that make everyday life easier.

Start With Just Five Minutes
If your home or your to-do list feels overwhelming right now, don’t start by telling yourself you need to get everything done.
Pick one thing.
Set a timer for five minutes if you need to.
Clear one countertop.
Straighten one room.
Empty the dishwasher.
Put away the things that don’t belong.
Sweep the porch.
Then move on with your day.
You may decide to do another five-minute task later—or you may not. Either way, you’ve made progress.
I’ve learned that I don’t need to accomplish everything at once in order to feel productive.
Sometimes, five minutes is enough to make your home feel a little calmer, your day feel a little easier, and that never-ending to-do list feel much more manageable.
And during this busy season of life, I’ll happily take every five minutes I can get!
