DIY Café Curtain Rod Hack That Looks High-End

One of my favorite design elements in a home is café curtains.

They add charm, softness, and privacy without blocking natural light. I loved having them in our previous cottage, and I knew I wanted to incorporate them into our new home as well.

There was just one problem.

The curtain rods. In our cottage, I used tension curtain rods, but that was just a quick solution at the time.  I wanted something more high end for our permanent home.

The Problem with Store-Bought Café Curtain Rods

When I started shopping for permanent café curtain rods, I was shocked by the prices.

Many of the designer-inspired options I found online cost close to $100 per window—and that’s before purchasing the curtains themselves.

For several small windows throughout our home, that simply wasn’t realistic.

So I started looking for a better solution.

The Budget-Friendly Alternative

After a lot of searching, I found inexpensive café curtain rod brackets on Amazon.

Instead of purchasing the matching brass rods, I paired the brackets with solid metal rods from the hardware store.

The rods were much less expensive and could easily be cut to the exact width I needed. They also fit perfectly inside of the brackets.

Making Everything Look Custom

The secret was making all the hardware match.

I spray painted both the brackets and the rods using matte black spray paint to coordinate with the larger curtain hardware in my dining room.

Once everything dried, the pieces looked like they had been purchased as a complete custom set.

Installation

After the paint cured, my husband installed the brackets directly onto the window trim.

The solid rods slid perfectly into place, creating a sturdy, permanent curtain rod that looked far more expensive than it actually was.

I used these black metal curtain rings to hang the curtains. Once the café curtains were hung, the entire window felt finished.

Sometimes the best DIYs aren’t about making something from scratch—they’re about finding smarter, more affordable ways to achieve the same high-end look.

This was part of my summer dining room refresh and I am so happy I was able to add this extra charm to the area. This window is just off the dining room and I chose cafe curtains that coordinated with the ones that are in the actual dining room.
