How to Make Easy DIY Pinch Pleat Curtains
How to Make Easy DIY Pinch Pleat Curtains (Even If You’re a Beginner!)
If you’ve ever admired those beautiful custom pinch pleat curtains in designer homes but thought they were out of your budget, you’re going to love this project!
Today I’m sharing the easiest method I found for making your own DIY pinch pleat curtains. This was actually my very first attempt at making them, and I honestly couldn’t believe how simple the process was—or how professional they looked when they were finished.
The best part? You don’t need advanced sewing skills or expensive custom draperies. If you can sew a straight line, you can make these.
Why I Chose Pinch Pleat Curtains
Recently, I installed café curtains in my dining room, and I absolutely fell in love with the elegant look of pinch pleats. They instantly make a space feel more polished and custom while still maintaining that relaxed cottage or Nancy Meyers-inspired aesthetic that I love.
When it came time to decorate my primary bathroom, I knew I wanted to recreate that same look.
Since the bathroom doesn’t have blinds or window coverings, privacy was important—but I also wanted something beautiful that softened the room instead of covering it with bulky curtains.

The Secret to Easy Pinch Pleats
If you’ve been intimidated by pinch pleat curtains before, this is the part that’s going to change your mind.
Instead of measuring and hand-sewing every pleat individually, I used a pinch pleat tape kit from Amazon.
The kit comes with:
- Pinch pleat tape
- Pleater hooks
- Everything needed to create evenly spaced pleats
After folding over the top of the curtain, I simply sewed the pleat tape directly onto the back.
The only thing to remember is to sew the tape with the small pockets facing downward.
Those little pockets are what hold the pleater hooks later.
Supplies You’ll Need
- Home décor fabric
- Sewing machine
- Iron
- Thread
- Pinch pleat curtain tape & hook kit
- Curtain rod rings
- Spray paint (optional for hardware)
Step 1: Prepare Your Curtain Panels
First you want to cut them down to size.
Before sewing anything, iron all of your fabric.
This makes a huge difference in creating crisp, professional-looking seams. And you don’t have to use pins, saving you the hassle of putting them on and taking them off later.
I completed my curtain in this order:
- Hem the bottom edge.
- Sew both side hems.
- Fold over the top edge.
- Press everything flat before attaching the pleat tape.

Taking a few extra minutes to iron each seam helps the finished curtains look much more custom.
Step 2: Sew on the Pinch Pleat Tape
The magic is really in the curtain tape.
Simply position the tape along the folded top hem of your curtain with the small pockets facing downward. These pockets will eventually hold the pleat hooks.
Using a straight stitch, sew:
- Across the top edge of the tape.
- Across the bottom edge.
- Secure both ends.
That’s it!
No complicated pleating calculations required.
Step 3: Insert the Pleat Hooks
Once the tape is attached, insert the metal pleat hooks into the pockets.
Each hook has several prongs that slide into adjacent pockets to create the classic pinch pleat.
After experimenting with the spacing, I found that leaving two empty pockets between each hook created the perfect amount of fullness without making the curtains look overcrowded.
When viewed from the front, the tape naturally forms those beautiful, crisp pleats that give custom drapery its signature look.
Step 4: Hang Your Curtains
For these curtains, I reused the same curtain rod trick I used for my dining room café curtains.
I spray-painted the curtain rod in an oil-rubbed bronze finish to better coordinate with the bathroom fixtures before attaching the pleated hooks to each ring.
Installation couldn’t have been easier.
The rings simply slide across the curtain rod while the pleats remain beautifully structured.
The Finished Look
I couldn’t be happier with how these turned out.
The pinch pleats instantly elevated the fabric and made the curtains look far more expensive than they actually were. They provide privacy for our bathroom while still letting in beautiful natural light, and they perfectly complement the relaxed, timeless style I’m creating throughout our home.
Sometimes it’s the smallest details that make the biggest impact.
The Finished Result
I honestly couldn’t be happier with how these turned out.
The pinch pleats instantly elevated the fabric and gave these simple café curtains a custom designer look.
They’re soft, timeless, and exactly the kind of detail that makes a room feel thoughtfully designed without spending hundreds of dollars on custom window treatments.
