DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

Hello sweet friends! I recently went to South Carolina for a workshop and to meet one of my favorite YouTubers, Debi’s Design Diary. On the days leading up to the trip I told my husband that I wanted to stop by every single second hand, thrift or antique store along the way.

I love thrifting but I will be honest, by the end of last year I was so burned out. And I needed to go and take a fun break and just look at pretty things instead of make pretty things for a change. Of course, I could not help myself and I ended up buying things to DIY anyways. I share more about the trip here.

In one of the shops, I found these cute mini cloches at only 50 cents each so naturally I picked them up. I didn’t have a plan for them right away, but I knew I wanted to incorporate them into some candle holders of some type.

Oh and did I mention, I have a huge announcement in this post? Keep reading to see what it is!

After we came back from our trip I came across a FB Marketplace listing for a couple of banisters a lady was selling for $10 for the pair. I quickly went by and picked them up.

Aren’t they amazing?!

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 1 DIY Candlesticks From Old BanistersMy husband and I had been working with our bathroom renovation and he had his power tools out, so I quickly asked him to cut them down for me. I had him cut them at differing heights.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 2 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

He also cut the bolts off at the bottom of each.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 3 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

I recently purchased this box of wooden rings for another project and decided to use two of them for the tops of the candleholders. This gave it a more finished look (instead of it looking like it had been cut off).

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 4 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

I used some wood glue to adhere them.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 5 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

And I placed something heavy to hold them down while they dried.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 6 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

Since sage is the color of the year, I thought I would go with DIY Paint’s Gypsy Green and on that note…..

I will actually be selling these paints very shortly!

I met Debi last month and she is a fan of my Youtube channel (as much as I am of hers) and she brought up the idea of me selling her paints. After so much deliberation (cause I overthink) and a couple of conversations, I thought I would take the leap of faith. I mean, I talk about her clear wax all the time anyway. LOL!

So right now I am setting up everything behind the scenes so I can get started and sell them in my online shop.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 7 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

Her paint is highly pigmented and is made of only 9 all natural ingredients. Because it is clay based it has amazing coverage and dries with a chalky feel.

It’s great for both small and large projects. And I will even be carrying sample size paints as well for smaller projects like this!

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 8 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

I love the look and feel of it and I cannot wait to show you more from her line.

Now back to the candlesticks… I could have left them with one coat, but I went ahead and did a second since the banister was stained such a dark color to begin with.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 9 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

After they dried I used some of her clear wax (it’s my favorite!) It deepens the color and seals the surface so smoothly.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 10 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

While it was still tacky I sprinkled some of DIY Paint’s white Decrepit Dust and worked it into the paint strokes and all of the nooks and crannies with my brush.

I also incorporated some of the DIY Paint’s white wax to bring out the creases even more.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 11 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

Then I wiped off the excess with clean cloth that was just a little damp. As you can see I also distressed some of the edges a bit. You can see the different after I removed the excess on the bottom part of the candlestick.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 12 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

Next I took some E6000 and applied it to the top rings so that I could adhere the mini glass cloches.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 13 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

I even used a small level to make sure they stuck on straight.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 15 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

And that was it! I think this is probably one of my best DIYs yet!

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 16 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

It’s like the mini cloches were meant for these banister legs! Such a perfect fit. Can you tell these were DIY candlesticks from old banisters?

I think the distressing is just the perfect amount and the white wax gives it an aged look. And I even put felt underneath them to protect my furniture surfaces.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 18 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

What’s even more exciting is that I was able to make these book ends from one of the banister tops as well! And I still have more banister pieces left to make more projects!

If you are interested in how I made these, you can watch how I made these here.

Hey there friends! Hope you are all having a wonderful week. The weather is getting warmer and I am loving every bit of it. I really enjoy working outside on projects and I would much rather do it in the warmth.

Lately, I have been running a little low on thrifted items to make over so I decided to go thrifting last week. I was able to venture out to some new stores and I came across some great finds! You can come shop with me and check out my entire haul here.

For this post we are going to focus on the jug (or vase, whichever you prefer?). I knew I had to have it the minute I saw it. At $6.99 it was a little on the high end for me, but I loved the shape and knew exactly what I wanted to do.

Pottery Barn Artisna Vase Dupe 1 Pottery Barn Artisan Vase Dupe

I had come across these artisan vases online at Pottery Barn a few days prior and I was inspired to create something similar.

Look at those prices… yeah, that’s a no go from me. ?

Screen Shot 2021 03 02 at 10.30.33 PM Pottery Barn Artisan Vase DupeThe surface of the jug that I bought was not what I had in mind for my look and it had little recessed areas on the decorative florals that I needed to get rid of… so the first thing I did was get some joint compound.

Pottery Barn Artisna Vase Dupe 2 Pottery Barn Artisan Vase Dupe

It was what I had on hand, however spackle could work for this too.

I made sure the surface was clean first, then I removed the sticker and sprayed it down with mix of 50/50 alcohol and water. I wiped it well and let it dry.

With some gloves, I then applied joint compound all over the jug, using my hands to create long strokes from top to bottom.

Pottery Barn Artisna Vase Dupe 3 Pottery Barn Artisan Vase Dupe

I let it dry and then came back in to do it again, making sure the entire surface was covered. Once both coats were dry I came in with a 220 grit sandpaper and smoothed out the ridges that were naturally created as I covered the jug with compound.

Pottery Barn Artisna Vase Dupe 4 Pottery Barn Artisan Vase DupeAfter that was done I made sure to remove any excess sanding dust with a wet rag.

As you can see below, it wasn’t perfectly smooth but that’s how I wanted it since I did want it to look like an old handmade piece of pottery.

Pottery Barn Artisna Vase Dupe 5 Pottery Barn Artisan Vase Dupe

Next I took some chalk paint in the color milk jug (how appropriate) and gave the piece two coats.

Pottery Barn Artisna Vase Dupe 6 Pottery Barn Artisan Vase Dupe

Next was the fun part: distressing it to make it look like antique handmade artisan pottery! I mixed some of the milk jug paint with some of my favorite antiquing wax to darken the color a bit.

Pottery Barn Artisna Vase Dupe 7 Pottery Barn Artisan Vase Dupe

Then I began to use a flat brush and started to drag the side of the brush (with some paint) along the surface of the jug.

Pottery Barn Artisna Vase Dupe 8 Pottery Barn Artisan Vase Dupe

This process took a while for me since it was my first time trying… so I was winging it as I went.

The best thing about this though, is that you can do what you prefer for this process. You can add as much as you or as little paint for the “aging”. You can also choose to go with lighter or darker colors.

This is extremely versatile and super fun!

Pottery Barn Artisna Vase Dupe 9 Pottery Barn Artisan Vase Dupe

I came in with just the antiquing wax in some areas to make the aging more obvious. One thing I also made sure to do was paint the inside of the vase that was exposed. I didn’t want to have green pottery showing through.

In other areas of the jug I used a chip brush and I even incorporated vertical strokes.

Pottery Barn Artisna Vase Dupe 10 Pottery Barn Artisan Vase Dupe

Once I was done, here is how it turned out!

Pottery Barn Artisna Vase Dupe 11 Pottery Barn Artisan Vase DupeIt turned out so good! And now I want more since this one is looking pretty lonely. Plus doing it again will give me more practice and time to test other modes of application.

Pottery Barn Artisna Vase Dupe 12 Pottery Barn Artisan Vase Dupe

I just love how it looks with florals as well. I will say I wasn’t sure I could pull this off since I really wanted it to look authentic but I think I did pretty good.

Would you try something like this? Let me know below….

I also have 4 other thrifty high end DIY’s that you might enjoy and you are welcome to watch below!

Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover

*Some of the following links are affiliate links. Please see full disclosure for complete details*

Hey there friends and happy Wednesday! I am back and I have an amazing thrift store makeover for you all.

Do you love candleholders as much as I do! If you are here you probably do!

I found these at my local Goodwill and they only cost me 99 cents each! Score!

They had good bones, but I thought we could do even more with them.

Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover 1 1 Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover

First thing I did was clean them with some rubbing alcohol (why are things at thrift stores always sticky?!).

Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover 1 2 Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover

Next, I took some wooden beads from my stash and with the help of some bakers twine, I wrapped them around the top of the candle stick and around the bottom. I secured them with hot glue.

Make sure they are on there well.

RELATED: Spring Spanglish Sign DIY

Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover 3 Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover

Afterwards, I took some chalk paint in Sandstorm and painted them (I actually painted only one, but more on that in a bit).

Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover 4 Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover

Once the paint was dry I took some spackle from Dollar Tree and applied it all over the nooks and spaces between the beads.

Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover 5 Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover

I did that to both the top beads and the bottom beads… are you cringing yet? ?

Trust the process….

Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover 6 Thrift Store Candleholder MakeoverYou want to let the spackle cure overnight so that you can come back the next day and sand everything down. If you don’t give it enough time, the spackle will crumble and fall off in this next step.

As you can see, I added the spackle to candlestick below without paint. I did this to see if it was better to apply the spackle before painting it with chalk paint. I actually found that the spackle sticks better with one coat of chalk paint already on.

You’re welcome. ?

Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover 7 Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover

In this process, you want to remove all of the excess spackle and bring back out the wooden beads. Make sure everything is as smooth as possible. Take your time with this. The more effort the better it will turn out in the end.

Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover 8 Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover

After I sanded everything I made sure to clean off the surfaces before applying two coats of chalk paint.

Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover 9 Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover

Then I came in with Debi Design Diaries white wax and began applying it all over the candleholder. I wanted to make sure that all the nooks and cracks got some of it.

Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover 10 Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover

I even used and artist brush at times and it really helped out.

Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover 11 Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover

Finally after that wax dried, I came in with my Folkart home decor clear wax and sealed everything. I removed all of the excess wax and allowed them to cure overnight.

Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover 15 Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover

 And that was a wrap!

Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover 12 Thrift Store Candleholder Makeover

These are PERFECT for spring! And they go so well on my coffee table in my sunroom along with several other thrifted flips… can you spot them?

You know which ones they are if you saw my latest video cause I have 6 more ideas where these came from below!

It’s like they were meant to be this way. I am not gonna lie, these took several days to make, but I had a vision and I wanted to make them work.

And I was so happy I kept at it because I love the end result!

DIY Teapot Planter Makeover

*Some of the following links are affiliate links. Please see full disclosure for details*.

Happy Sunday!

I hope everyone is doing well and if you are a mother, I want to wish you a Happy Mother’s Day!

This week is the last full week of homeschool left. Can I get an “AMEN!?” The kids and I are all looking forward to summer vacation and everything that it will entail. We are ready!

If only this 30 degree nighttime weather would go away!?

Anyways, I wanted to share this fun little makeover that I did to a teapot I bought at Hobby Lobby that was on clearance a while back.

Here is what it looked like when I purchased it. On any other occasion I probably would have walked right by it, but I loved the shape and with the right paint I knew it could be a gem. Plus, it was only $2.19! Who could resist?

DIY Teapot Planter Makeover 1 DIY Teapot Planter Makeover

The first thing I did was clean it with alcohol making sure the surface was as clean as possible. Then I took it outside and gave it several light coats of spray paint. I used Rust-Oleum American Accents Spray Paint which adheres to many surfaces in the color Blossom White.

She was already looking better!

DIY Teapot Planter Makeover 2 DIY Teapot Planter Makeover

But I wanted to take it a bit further and give it a similar look as my Pottery Barn Duped Vases.

So I taped the bottom third of the teapot off with washi tape.

DIY Teapot Planter Makeover 3 DIY Teapot Planter Makeover

And then I painted the bottom with Martha Stewart’s Tilled Soil.

DIY Teapot Planter Makeover 4 DIY Teapot Planter Makeover

I gave it two coats and then removed the tape.

Then I took this stencil that I purchased at Dollar Tree. It is a flexible stencil so it would work great on a round surface. I liked the little asterisk in the center since it reminded me of a little flower so I taped it off.

DIY Teapot Planter Makeover 5 DIY Teapot Planter Makeover

And using navy blue acrylic paint and a spouncer, I began to stencil the teapot all the way around.

DIY Teapot Planter Makeover 6 DIY Teapot Planter Makeover

I did 3 rows alternating the flower positions but kept the pattern simple. And that was it! I added a faux plant to it with the intention of adding a real one in the future, but before I could decide on the plant, my mom came over and pretty much claimed it as her own. LOL!

Now it’s at her house and she loves it.

I did manage to get some pretty shots after I was done with it  (and it was still in my possession ?).

DIY Teapot Planter Makeover 8 DIY Teapot Planter Makeover

Looks like I will be on the hunt for another teapot soon. I think it’s darling!

And perfect for anyone wanting that coastal farmhouse look. Just goes to show you don’t always have to pass items up in the store if they are the wrong color (as long as they are the right price of course).

DIY Teapot Planter Makeover 7 DIY Teapot Planter Makeover

Is anyone else dying to get back to thrift stores? I’m sure there would be some great teapots there!

I hope you enjoyed this DIY and as always, don’t forget to share with your friends!

Thrifted Table Transformation

*Some of the links are affiliate links for your convenience. Please see full disclosure here*

Happy Wednesday! Hope you all are having a great week.

It’s been a while since I have made over a piece of furniture and frankly I was itching to. I love creating home decor DIY’s but my love of DIYing in general came from when I made over my very first piece of furniture (be kind?).

I purchased this cute table months ago at Goodwill for only $13 and it has been looking at me begging me to make it over.

Thrifted Table Transformation Thrifted Table Transformation

The top of it was pretty damaged so I knew I had to repair it first.

Thrifted Table Transformation 3 Thrifted Table Transformation

I used 2 different sanders for this. The first one was an orbital sander and I used 120 Grit to take the top layer off.

The second was this JobMax Multi-Tool so I could get in those tight corners. This tool is pretty handy because it has different heads you can change out for different projects around the house.

Thrifted Table Transformation 4 Thrifted Table Transformation

After I was done with the Multi-Tool I went back with the orbital sander (220 Grit) to give it a smooth finish. I also lightly sanded the other two tops, but just enough to make the paint stick.

I wiped everything with a damp cloth and I was ready to paint. I used Folkart Home Decor Chalk Paint in the color Hazy (the perfect gray blue).

I gave the table 2 coats.

If you are looking for affordable chalk paint brushes, these are the ones I use.

Thrifted Table Transformation 7 Thrifted Table Transformation

After both coats were dry I went in with a small piece of sand paper (220 GRIT) to distress the table.

Thrifted Table Transformation 8 Thrifted Table Transformation

Here is what the table looked like at this stage.

Thrifted Table Transformation 6 Thrifted Table Transformation

The next step was to seal it with wax, and this is where the magic happened. I used Folkart Home Decor Clear Wax.

I like to use a lint free cloth and just work it into the surface, removing any excess as I go.

One thing to note… if you have 2 surfaces you are sealing with wax (wood and paint) then make sure to use a new cloth for the paint. Or else you run the risk of the wood color rubbing off the cloth and onto your painted surface.

Thrifted Table Transformation 9 Thrifted Table Transformation

After letting it dry for over 24 hours here’s how it turned out.

Thrifted Table Transformation 11 Thrifted Table Transformation

She’s perfect and goes with my coastal farmhouse style.

Thrifted Table Transformation 10 Thrifted Table Transformation

The top just pops against that blue. I am so glad I left it natural.

Thrifted Table Transformation 2 Thrifted Table Transformation

The shelves are perfect for books too. I went ahead and laid Lisa’s book Simple Farmhouse Life on the middle shelf. Have you checked her book out yet? She’s one of my favorite Youtubers.

Now that I got bit by the bug, I have plans for another table I got for FREE on FB Marketplace back in February.

Thrift Store Makeovers Episode 1

Thrift Store Makeovers Episode 1

*Some of the links below are affiliate links, for a better explanation, please see full disclosure here*

Happy Monday!

I have a thrifted DIY for you all today, but this one is coming from a different angle.

Usually when I share a post like this, I share clear step by step tutorials that work out fine, but unfortunately not all of my DIY’s turn out that way. As a matter of fact, some of them hit some bumps and this one was one of them indeed.

Oh yes… ??‍♀️

So for this post, I thought  I would share everything I did (that I ended up NOT liking) and then the simple steps I took to actually get it to look the way I wanted to in the end.

Sometimes, it’s too easy to complicate things and that is just what I did here, but hey, we are all human.

Supplies I used (including some that didn’t make it to the end result):

  • Brushed Metal in Brushed Bronze
  • White Chalk Paint
  • Antiquing Wax:
  • Folkart Acrylic Paint in Peppercorn

Last week, I shared my thrift haul on my Youtube channel and I shared this cute metal tin.  I loved the pattern and style, just not the color.

Thrift Store Makeover BEFORe Thrift Store Makeovers Episode 1

So I thought I would add some Peppercorn (which I LOVE by the way) to the base.

Thrift Store Makeover 1 Thrift Store Makeovers Episode 1

Then I added some Brushed Bronze to the top and bottom legs. This is the same Brushed Bronze paint I used on my faux vintage bells.

I even dry-brushed some on the peppercorn.

Thrift Store Makeover 2 Thrift Store Makeovers Episode 1

Then I dry-brushed some of my white chalk paint.

Thrift Store Makeover 3 Thrift Store Makeovers Episode 1

But it looked too intense. So I decided to add watered-down chalk paint to all of it and then wipe it off.

Thrift Store Makeover 4 Thrift Store Makeovers Episode 1

Talk about disaster!

I had to step back a minute and relax and rethink this through.

Thrift Store Makeover 5 Thrift Store Makeovers Episode 1

After an hour or so I came back and went back to the beginning. This time I painted everything (except for the feet and round handles) with the Brushed Bronze.

And then to age it, I mixed a little bit of the white chalk paint with the antiquing wax and literally began to finger paint! It was like I was back in elementary school.

And guess what?!

I actually had fun this time around!

Thrift Store Makeover 6 Thrift Store Makeovers Episode 1

As it turns out, that was all this piece needed.

Thrift Store Makeover 7 Thrift Store Makeovers Episode 1

So simple, yet so chic.

Thrift Store Makeover 10 Thrift Store Makeovers Episode 1

I love the textures and the bright bronze along with the white distressed look.

I added a little greenery and it was perfect.

And check out this side-by-side!

I was also happy to try out a new color. I love all things white, but this goes perfect with so many things as well (like my neutral Valentine’s DIY’s)

Since I was so happy with how this turned out I tried my had at another thrift store flip…

I love finding cute little urns in thrift stores and it doesn’t matter what they are made out of, you can give them a faux cement look! This is actually the second time I have done this and now I want to have a little collection of them.

5 Dollar Goodwill Challenge Fall Centerpiece 2018

5 Dollar Goodwill Challenge FAll 2018 Pin1 5 Dollar Goodwill Challenge Fall Centerpiece 2018

So remember when I shared my last thrift store haul and I had purchased that obnoxiously red basket for $2.52?

Thrift Store Haul 2 3 5 Dollar Goodwill Challenge Fall Centerpiece 2018

Well, it was finally time to give it a facelift!

It was perfect timing too, because I was able to finish it just in time for the $5 Goodwill Seasonal Challenge hosted by Hillary at Old World Home. This challenge is always so fun because there are so many great videos on how to up-cycle thrift store items into beautiful pieces without spending more than $5 at the thrift store.

The best thing about this transformation is that it’s super easy and only required paint!

Paint I used:

*some of the links are affiliate links*
  • Martha Stewart Vintage Decor Paint in Tilled Soil
  • Folk Art Home Decor Chalk Paint in Parisian Grey
  • Rust-Oleum Chalked Paint in Linen White

Here’s what I did:

So first, I used the Tilled Soil paint and gave the basket 2 coats, making sure the red was completely covered.

5 Dollar Goodwill Challenge FAll 2018 5 Dollar Goodwill Challenge Fall Centerpiece 2018

Then once the paint was fairly dry, I dry-brushed the Parisian Grey paint making light strokes all over the basket.I didn’t want the basket looking too brown.

By adding the gray throughout it gave it a more weathered look.

5 Dollar Goodwill Challenge FAll 2018 4 5 Dollar Goodwill Challenge Fall Centerpiece 2018

And finally I added my favorite paint, Linen White to give it that coastal driftwood feel.

I dry-brushed it on as well making sure to get both the inside and outside of the basket.

5 Dollar Goodwill Challenge FAll 2018 5 5 Dollar Goodwill Challenge Fall Centerpiece 2018

Then I had my little helper (aka 6 year old daughter, Natalia) help me decorate the basket with pumpkins I had from last year.

You can see her in the full tutorial below.

And that was basically it! Like my daughter says, “Easy peasy lemon squeezy!”

5 Dollar Goodwill Challenge FAll 2018 5 Dollar Goodwill Challenge Fall Centerpiece 2018

I love how it turned out and I am so happy that I was able to grab that basket before anyone else did. It was in perfect condition, it just needed a little TLC…

And it looks so good with my neutral pumpkins & fall decor this year.

Pottery Barn Inspired Mirror DIY

*Please note that some of the links below are affiliate links. For full disclosure, please go here*

Hello dear friends! I am so excited because today is the first day of my new monthly Look for Less Challenge that I mentioned to you a couple of weeks ago. However, I must apologize right away because I only have the video tutorial ready for you (life happened this week and I am a little behind), but rest assured I will be updating this post in a couple of days in order to include the step by step blog post as well for those of you who prefer that method.

So…..I have been wanting to create a trellis mirror for a while now. They are not only gorgeous, but they are timeless as well. However, these mirrors can come with a hefty price tag.

I have been eyeing one particular mirror at Pottery Barn… the one below to be exact….

Isn’t she dreamy?

Screen Shot 2018 07 18 at 3.52.46 PM Pottery Barn Inspired Mirror DIY

And while it’s currently on sale, it’s still too much for my budget!

So, I thought I would recreate it myself.

I headed off to my local Goodwill and with the help of some 3/8″ square dowels, a thrifted mirror that cost me $5.95, a hand saw (I recommend this one for dowels), some chalk paint in the color Linen White here is what I came up with…

Oh and my co-host Heidi Sonboul upholstered a thrifted chair to look like something you would buy at Pottery Barn as well. Definitely check her video out too!

I hope you enjoyed the tutorial above and I hope this inspired you to recreate something you have been eyeing that is totally out of your budget. Just because you can’t buy it doesn’t mean you can’t “have” it!

How to Sew a Basket Liner

Happy Thursday dear friends! I am so excited today because I am joining in again on another thrift store upcycle project along with some other talented bloggers. Last month, I shared my farmhouse box makeover  and previously I shared my Goodwill lamp makeover, and while I am sharing another coastal farmhouse themed project, this one will not require paint.

One of my earliest sewing projects was my extra long table runner and I just shared some navy and white round chargers that turned amazing (to my surprise) so I am trying to incorporate more sewing tutorials on my blog. However, please note, I am not in any way shape or form a seamstress. I am mediocre at best, but it is something I enjoy and the more I do it the more I like to challenge myself.

You’ve been warned! ?

So if you haven’t seen this monthly thrift store upcycle challenge before here is what it’s all about!

The Rules:

  • Upcycle an item(s) from a thrift store, resale store, or garage sale into a new piece of decor.
  • There’s no monthly theme.
  • There’s no budget to stick to.

My Project: How to Sew a Basket Liner (for my Goodwill Basket)

I recently shared my latest thrift store haul video and in it I scored a square basket at my local Goodwill for under $2.00. Click here to watch the video and see what else I scored.

Since I had a small amount of fabric from my craft room transformation I thought I would use it to create a liner. I was so happy I had just enough for it. Here’s a sneak peak!

How to sew a basket liner 2 How to Sew a Basket Liner

I am sure there are better tutorials out there, but mine is a little different because I don’t use a tape measure. NOPE! I just eyeball everything, but it’s simple and it works every time. So here is how I do it.

First…

I take my fabric and cut the fabric for the sides of the basket. I make sure to leave about 1/2 inch allowance on the sides and that it will be tall enough to go over the sides of the basket. There is not exact measurement, just leave enough for however much fabric you want to come down and over the sides.

I cut the 2 longer sides first and then the 2 shorter sides.

How to sew a basket liner 8 How to Sew a Basket Liner

Since I barely had any fabric left I had to use some leftover white denim from my last project for the base. I basically set the basket on top of it and cut around it leaving about another 1/2 inch seam allowance.

Then it was time to attach the sides to the base. I attached the shorter sides first. Make sure your fabric is facing in for this.

How to sew a basket liner 7 How to Sew a Basket Liner

I sewed them together with my Singer (this is the one I own).

How to sew a basket liner 5 How to Sew a Basket Liner

I attached the other short side.

How to sew a basket liner 3 How to Sew a Basket Liner

Then it was time for the longer sides. Make sure to sew up until the shorter side seam (shown below). Not past.

How to sew a basket liner 4 How to Sew a Basket Liner

You should have something that resembles a cross at this point.

How to sew a basket liner 14 How to Sew a Basket Liner

Then it’s time to attach the sides. I do them all at once.

How to sew a basket liner 15 How to Sew a Basket Liner

You will see that the bottom seam allowance (below) will be wider than the top. This is GOOD. This is what you want.

How to sew a basket liner 13 How to Sew a Basket Liner

Go ahead and sew all 4 sides together. Once done, insert the liner and make sure it lines up nicely and make any adjustments if necessary.

How to sew a basket liner 16 How to Sew a Basket Liner

Once I am happy with it, I run my serger on all of the seams, to prevent the fabric from fraying  (here is the serger I use).

How to sew a basket liner 11 How to Sew a Basket Liner

If you don’t have a serger you can use the zigzag stitch on your machine.

I even serge the boarder that goes over the basket.

How to sew a basket liner 12 How to Sew a Basket Liner

Once I do this I decide how low I want my liner to come down on the basket and pin it.

How to sew a basket liner 9 How to Sew a Basket Liner

Then I run it one last time through my machine.

How to sew a basket liner 10 How to Sew a Basket Liner

And that’s it!  Now I have a basket that looks like it came from Pottery Barn!  ? And it has that perfect coastal farmhouse style I love so much!

I hope you like this thrift store transformation! The best thing about this, is that I can change the look of the fabric for different seasons and holidays just by changing the liner. I hope to get a lot of use out this little basket.

I will see you soon!

Thrift Store Lamp Transformation

Hello friends! I didn’t realize it had been this long since I wrote a new post. Yikes! Truth be told… many things have been going on in the background and these past few weeks have been a little overwhelming, however, I am glad to say I am back in the game and you will be seeing more of me and my projects. I have several in the works and will be sharing my ideas in the next few days.

I have been thinking about implementing some lifestyle changes recently and one of my newest (and most important) goals this year for me is to spend as little as possible when it comes to my home’s decor.

Our home is large….. 5,200 sq. ft. large and since I stay at home I cannot just go out and get whatever I want especially since I am really trying to implement my new style and make the best with what I have until I can do all the things I want with my home.

However, I still want a stylish home!!! Gah!

And I know, these things take time and I have been focused on the end goal instead of making the best of the journey and allowing it to properly feed my destination.

So…. that being said, it’s back to Goodwill Hunting as I like to call it and since I have completed my craft room I will be putting it to good use as I transform inexpensive finds to fit my needs and my style.

And what better way to start than with a thrift store challenge!

I joined several other bloggers to get my butt into gear and get me started on this journey. In today’s post I will be showing you what I did in my latest thrift store lamp transformation (that was almost a disaster).

It will be a monthly thing to so the details are below in case you wish to join along.

The Rules:

  • Upcycle an item(s) from a thrift store, resale store, or garage sale into a new piece of decor.
  • There’s no monthly theme.
  • There’s no budget to stick to.

Thrift Store Lamp Transformation

So I bought this lamp at my local Goodwill for $3.93. It was still in great working condition and it had a beautiful shape to it.
Thrift Store Lamp Transformation 1 Thrift Store Lamp Transformation

It was perfect, and I knew exactly what I was going to do with it.

My goal was to buy a linen drum shade (or at least one that looked like linen) and paint the base and distress it for that farmhouse look.

Here are the supplies I used:

  • White chalk paint (I used this one)
  • 180 Grit Sandpaper Sheets
  • White wax (I used this one)
  • Wax brush – here is my favorite inexpensive one that I used in this tutorial and on these shelves
  • Old rag
  • Small brush
  • Clear adhesive bumper pads

To watch the tutorial you can click the video below as well…

Let’s get started……

First I cleaned off the lamp with a damp cloth.

Then I applied the white chalk paint.

I’m not gonna  lie. It looked a hot mess and I freaked out a bit when I saw the first coat.

But I kept going…

After three coats, the lamp was better coated, but then the paint was so thick in some places it looked terrible.

However, I knew I wanted it to be distressed so I began sanding (and praying) that it would turn out okay. I was concerned about the brush strokes…

You can see them up close below.

What a nightmare…. but I kept going… I was determined to make this right!

And alas, it got better!

The brush strokes finally started fading away… but not without some serious elbow grease.

Then when I could not sand anymore I wiped it all down with a damp cloth and proceeded to apply the white wax. As soon as I was done applying it, I wiped the excess off.

I let the wax cure overnight for 24 hours and then added the shade and placed it on the side table in my keeping room.

It’s not “perfect” by any means, but I am really happy with it. The lamp looks so much better and I love how well the shade complements it. I added little clear adhesive tabs to the bottom so it would not scratch any of my furniture.

It’s got that farmhouse rustic charm but still light and airy for that coastal look I love so much.

Since I had all of the supplies at hand the cost for this project was only $19 since the lamp was $3.93 and the shade was $14.99.

Similar ones online go for waaaaay more… just check out this one below available right now! Yikes!

It’s gorgeous, but I would rather save my money and cherish the one I just transformed…. ?
