DIY Teapot Planter Makeover

Happy Sunday!

I hope everyone is doing well and if you are a mother, I want to wish you a Happy Mother’s Day!

This week is the last full week of homeschool left. Can I get an “AMEN!?” The kids and I are all looking forward to summer vacation and everything that it will entail. We are ready!

If only this 30 degree nighttime weather would go away!?

Anyways, I wanted to share this fun little makeover that I did to a teapot I bought at Hobby Lobby that was on clearance a while back.

Here is what it looked like when I purchased it. On any other occasion I probably would have walked right by it, but I loved the shape and with the right paint I knew it could be a gem. Plus, it was only $2.19! Who could resist?

DIY Teapot Planter Makeover 1 DIY Teapot Planter Makeover

The first thing I did was clean it with alcohol making sure the surface was as clean as possible. Then I took it outside and gave it several light coats of spray paint. I used Rust-Oleum American Accents Spray Paint which adheres to many surfaces in the color Blossom White.

She was already looking better!

But I wanted to take it a bit further and give it a similar look as my Pottery Barn Duped Vases.

So I taped the bottom third of the teapot off with washi tape.

And then I painted the bottom with Martha Stewart’s Tilled Soil.

I gave it two coats and then removed the tape.

Then I took this stencil that I purchased at Dollar Tree. It is a flexible stencil so it would work great on a round surface. I liked the little asterisk in the center since it reminded me of a little flower so I taped it off.

And using navy blue acrylic paint and a spouncer, I began to stencil the teapot all the way around.

I did 3 rows alternating the flower positions but kept the pattern simple. And that was it! I added a faux plant to it with the intention of adding a real one in the future, but before I could decide on the plant, my mom came over and pretty much claimed it as her own. LOL!

Now it’s at her house and she loves it.

I did manage to get some pretty shots after I was done with it  (and it was still in my possession ?).

Looks like I will be on the hunt for another teapot soon. I think it’s darling!

And perfect for anyone wanting that coastal farmhouse look. Just goes to show you don’t always have to pass items up in the store if they are the wrong color (as long as they are the right price of course).

Is anyone else dying to get back to thrift stores? I’m sure there would be some great teapots there!

I hope you enjoyed this DIY and as always, don’t forget to share with your friends!

I will see you in the next one. Until then… adios!

DIY Painted Terra-Cotta Pots

MAKE SURE TO GO TO THE END FOR A CHANCE TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN SUMMER PROJECT!

I am so grateful for warm weather and sunny days! Now that we are spending more time outside I like to brighten my front porch with beautiful flowers in different sized terra-cotta pots.

Why terra-cotta pots?

Well because they are the most inexpensive. And while they aren’t the prettiest, they are super sturdy, extremely weather resistant and they are easy to customize to your liking, which is why I wanted to share this DIY solution that will not only make them look more expensive, but will also help you get them painted really fast!

DIY Painted Terra cotta pots 4 DIY Painted Terra Cotta Pots

I mean really! They look so sad, don’t they???

Now, you can paint them just one color, but that would be too simple and boring. So, instead here is how you can take them to the next level by making them two-toned. You can choose any two colors, but I wanted them to look a little chic so I chose to add a champagne colored paint to the top rim.

And I have a nice little hack in the quick video below that shows you how to get a clean line without it being a pain in the butt!

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Terra-cotta pots (different sizes)
  • Drop cloth (I used this canvas one and it’s really durable)
  • Spray Paint
  • ScotchBlue Pre-Taped Painter’s Plastic

INSTRUCTIONS:

First step…. lay all of your terra-cotta pots face down on your drop-cloth and begin spray painting. I like to start from the bottom up cause if the paint on the bottom edges gets damaged after you turn them over, you won’t see it.DIY Painted Terra cotta pots DIY Painted Terra Cotta Pots

When painting the rim a separate color, still turn the pot upside down. Make sure to cover the bottom lip of the rim and rim area only since the rest will be another color (like you see below).

DIY Painted Terra cotta pots 2 DIY Painted Terra Cotta Pots

If you use a paint & primer spray paint like I did you won’t need to prime them. You will need to do 2-3 coats to get an even finish. Once you have the bottom areas complete, flip them over and spray paint the top areas.

DIY Painted Terra cotta pots 3 DIY Painted Terra Cotta Pots

For the top rims you won’t need to tape anything off just yet. Just make sure to spray paint any remaining areas on the rim and the top edge and then give them enough time to dry so they aren’t tacky.

For the bottom portion of the two-toned pot, I show you exactly how to finish it in the short video below! Check out my little time saving hack and how well it turns out!

From Wedding Mirror to Corkboard

I have a little bit of a confession (stick around and you will probably read a lot of those), but my family inherited the hoarding gene, BAD. Both my parents have had a hard time letting go of things with sentimental value and sadly enough they passed that trait onto me.

Disclaimer: We are not like those people in the TV show, Hoarders, so don’t freak out just yet.

That being said there are still some things lying around my parents house, garage and shed that they just can’t let go. For example, my parents received an octagonal mirror as a wedding gift over 33 years ago that they could never let go. It’s not the prettiest of things and it’s made of plastic, but I always liked the shape… I guess they did too. They didn’t really have a use for it, so I offered to take it to my new home. But with just my luck, the mirror breaks during the move. Leave it to me to break something that lasted over 33 years!

Oh yeah, did I mention, I have the clumsy gene too…

Okay, so this is what I had left to work with…. and still I just could not throw it away especially since my parents kept it for so long. I felt really bad….

Goodwill Jewelry Box Makeover for Under $6

I was making one of my Goodwill rounds (cause it’s so hard for me to pass by that store and not go inside to see if they have any treasures!) and found this cute jewelry box for $2.92.DIY Jewelry Box Makeover Goodwill Jewelry Box Makeover for Under $6

It needed a bit of TLC…actually A LOT, cause the inside was a disaster.

DIY Gold Tray

Lately, I have been visiting my local Goodwill WAY TOO MUCH… That being said I have made some seriously awesome scores! You just never know when there will be something that will catch your eye. My local Goodwill puts new items out on a daily basis.

No, I don’t go there that often…. yet.

So now that gold is back in style, I have been wanting a cool gold tray for my bedroom (or just because). And this is what I came up with! It only cost $2.92 at Goodwill. Booyah!

Another Spray Paint Fix for the Master

We have a rather large master bedroom (pictures coming soon) and I need to fill up my empty walls, so I have been sifting through the Hobby Lobby clearance aisles in search of some usable pieces of art and I came across these!

DSC02773 1024x768 Another Spray Paint Fix for the Master

They measure about 12 x 12 inches and are made of resin so they aren’t heavy. They were on clearance for about $6 each (woot woot!). I love that they match well with my table top Fleur-de-Lis I fixed up last year. The pattern is raised so it has a lot of texture too.

Here is a close-up.

Fleur-de-lis

Isn’t it frustrating when you go to your local crafts/home decor store and you find something you like, but it’s the wrong finish or the wrong color, so you opt not to buy it???? Well, my friends not anymore! 2 things I am always stocked up on are primer spray cans and spray paint. DUH right!?!?

Lately, I have been getting a lot of inspiration from the French Provincial style and I found this really cute fleur-de-lis at my local Hobby Lobby marked down from $19.99 to $6.80…..SCORE! But the color was horrible and it had several scratches here and there, obviously from constant rejection and finally being throw into the clearance pile.

Please meet Exhibit A  (ahem…..ignore the dirty garage floor)

DSC02783 1024x768 Fleur de lis

Luckily I had my trusty Krylon multi-surface spray primer “in stock” so I couldn’t wait to get home and prime my little heart out! It works on EVERYTHING!

krylon primer Fleur de lis

I wanted this to go on my dresser in the master bedroom. My bedroom set is an off white color so I looked around my Lowes and I found the perfect match! American Accents Heirloom White (I’m in love). I have used this on a couple of other things as you will get to see. You will also see that I have a fascination with the color white…. YES, I KNOW! I am a parent with a little one, but she will just have to learn not to put her dirty little fingers on mommy’s nice white furniture, and white towels, and white fabrics……. Baby-proofing is going to be a @#$%^&!

Heirloom White Spray Can Fleur de lis

After letting it dry here is the finished product!

DSC02791 768x1024 Fleur de lis

And here it is on my dresser. I must say, it helps keep my jewelry looking nice and not just thrown there when I get home from work.

DSC 03032 680x1024 Fleur de lis

I like how it just dresses up the corner of my dresser. So ladies, here is your take-away…. just because it is not the right color, doesn’t mean you can’t buy it!
