Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover

Hey there! It has been a little while since I have posted and I am here to make it up! Today’s post has been a couple of years in the making. We have finally finished our guest bathroom! This bathroom has actually not been operational since we moved in… 2.5 years ago.

Crazy, I know.

This has been one of the reasons we only have my parents over at the house, LOL! No guest bath means no guests. During this time we just used the master bathroom or my daughter’s bathroom. This is technically my son’s bathroom that he would share with guests.

This bathroom was a wreck when we moved in.

Guest Bathroom Before 300x225 Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover

Besides the broken counter, this is what the bathroom looked like when we purchased the house. The hubby got a little excited with the demo before I took before pics.

It was dingy, dirty, smelly and sticky.

I sure as heck did not want to use it and I sure didn’t want anyone to see it.

Guest Bathroom Before 7 200x300 Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover

The finishes and fixtures were extremely dated. Of course this wasn’t news to us, we knew we were purchasing a fixer upper. We just didn’t realize that because of time and funds, it would take us a lot longer to complete.

The lights to the bathroom were a part of the medicine cabinet and mirror.

Guest Bathroom Before 5 300x225 Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover

The toilet area was extremely tight and uncomfortable for my husband to even sit on. His arm literally ran into the side of the sink cabinet. He was not having that.

Guest Bathroom Before 4 300x225 Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover

The floor was nothing special, just outdated linoleum. It was very dirty and stinky.

Guest Bathroom Before 3 300x225 Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover

The bathtub was a fiberglass insert in an almond color. It was in decent condition for what it was, but I knew I didn’t want to keep it.

So I drew up what I had planned for this bathroom. I wanted it to be a show piece since after all everyone was going to see it. We planned on doing everything ourselves too (with the exception of connecting the tub to the plumbing – we left that to the professionals).

RELATED: HOW TO MAKE A MOOD BOARD

2 300x169 Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover

This was my initial design and even though a few things changed after I had originally designed this mood board, the overall look and feel remained the same. The bathroom was a beast to tackle and we learned so much since there were so many design aspects that we had never done before… like we will use a cast iron tub instead of a fiberglass tub in the future.

We documented the entire process on video since it was just so much. You can watch it all go down below!

Here is how the bathroom looks now.

Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover 5 300x225 Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover

One of the things you can see right away that we changed from the mood board was the tile. We ended up going with a hexagonal gray tile on the floor.

We had previously used the mosaic tile in our pantry makeover and since living with it we just didn’t like how it was a little difficult to clean so we decided to use something else.

Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover 7 200x300 Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover

My husband removed the old tub himself and he installed all of the tile as well as the new fixtures. I just love the contrast of black on that white tile.
Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover 8 200x300 Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover

The toilet we installed was given to us by Gerber who we partnered with for the video. This toilet had a slender tank, elongated seat which pushed the seating forward and it had a nice decorative detail at the base. Such an improvement from the one originally that was there. It’s much for comfortable to sit on it!

Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover 3 300x225 Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover

The sink cabinet was a DIY. We purchased the sink at Lowes and the cabinet at a builder’s surplus store. The faucet was also from Gerber and it’s a bathroom version of the one we installed in our kitchen.  And the countertop was a leftover piece of butcher block that we used from an old table we had dismantled to help build our kitchen island.

The cabinet pulls were from Hobby Lobby and I got them for $2.50 each on sale!

Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover 4 300x225 Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover

I love the color of the bead board alongside the white and the wood.

Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover 6 300x225 Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover

I also love the vessel sink we chose. It’s a nice rectangular shape but it was still compact enough that it fit the smaller vanity.

And the board and batten just takes the bathroom to another level. The stained top makes it unique since it’s not something we see every day and it ties to the countertop nicely.

Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover 2 300x225 Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover

This was also the first time I painted the trim and door the same color and now I think I am addicted. I want to paint all the doors now! It makes a statement when you are inside looking at it and since the door is white on the other side, no one expects it.

Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover 9 200x300 Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover

Of course I added a few details here and there and I had to include some of my previous DIYS, including my ruffled shower curtain.

Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover 10 200x300 Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover

I am so happy with how this turned out and I hope you enjoyed it too! We are currently working on our first outdoor project and we will be tackling our daughter’s bathroom soon.

Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover 7 200x300 Extreme DIY Bathroom Makeover

We definitely learned a lot during this renovation and will be adjusting a few things here and there for upcoming projects, but overall I think we did a really good and you would never guess this was all done by us. I am mostly proud that we went above and beyond to make it a custom bathroom and that in the end it doesn’t look builder grade.

Share this with your friends or anyone who may be considering a bathroom renovation and I will see you in the next one.

Until then… adios!

Homeschool Room Reveal

Homeschool Room Reveal

*Some of the following links are affiliate links. Please see full disclosure for complete details*

Hello again friends! I am so excited to be sharing this post because I finally have another space in my home that is complete. If you have been following along on my Youtube channel you know that we just started our homeschool journey this year (completely unplanned) but it’s been a great change for my family.

I am so happy I get to teach my children on our own time and curriculum. The flexibility and informal setting has been great, but I still wanted an area that was dedicated to learning.

We first started out in the dining room, but I will admit, it was driving me crazy. There was too much chaos and having to remove everything off the table at the end of the day to eat dinner…. sucked.

However, in our much smaller home, I had to get creative when searching for a space.

Our home is a little older and when we first saw the home we noticed it had quite a unique layout. The stairs to the second floor take you to a landing that’s quite open, but not much can really be done with the space.

%name Homeschool Room Reveal

(original listing image)

It’s too large to leave it without furniture, but too small to create a living space or media room.

%name Homeschool Room Reveal

(original listing image)

We hadn’t done much in the space since we moved in, but we did get that nasty carpet replaced as soon as we moved in. It was so gross, it literally sent me to the hospital.

(original listing image)

As you can see from this angle, the area is a little awkward.

Since moving in, I had been using the space for my crafting and video editing. I had a table by the window to film my DIYs  and then the desk to the left is where I edited.

I am not going to lie…. it was not pretty.

Homeschool Room BEFORE Homeschool Room Reveal

However, now that I have my Youtube studio, this space is open and I thought it was the perfect opportunity to create a dedicated space for my kids to utilize.

So this is how I transformed the space!

You can watch the entire process in the video below:

The first thing I did was sell the bookcase, move the desk further down the space and paint the walls. My husband also added casing around the window to match the rest of the house. We only have one more window to do in the entire house and then we will be done with all the window molding.

You can read how to add window molding here.

Homeschool Room Reveal 8 Homeschool Room Reveal

I needed bookshelves to hold all of the kids books and some supplies and I purchased these 2 on Facebook Marketplace for only $10 each. They had great bones, but I wasn’t too fond of the color.

DIY Painted Bookcases 1 Homeschool Room Reveal

I gave them a makeover and shared the process in my last post. They look so much better now.

Homeschool Room Reveal 4 Homeschool Room Reveal

Next, I needed a work surface for the kids so I decided to use the table that I used for crafting. I no longer needed it since we found a free desk on FB Marketplace for my Youtube studio.

You can see that desk and how I transformed it here.

Homeschool Room Reveal 5 Homeschool Room Reveal

As soon as you come up the stairs you walk right into this space so I thought I would add a mirror right above the right bookcase so that it could at least resemble more of a foyer set up instead of a homeschool bookshelf.

Homeschool Room Reveal 3 Homeschool Room Reveal

The bench under the window is an old bench that used to be in the foyer of my last house. The carpet is from Boutique Rugs and this one is called the Pittsview.  I love their quality rugs and I have purchased from them several times.

They were my sponsor for the video I shared above and right now they have a Black Friday sale going on where you can get 65% off plus free shipping!  I give a lot more details about Boutique Rugs in my video and if you are looking for a rug now is the time for huge savings!

Homeschool Room Reveal 10 Homeschool Room Reveal

The curtains are from Plow & Hearth. I had them in my living room, but since I changed the curtains out for Christmas, I brought these up here.

The map is a Trash to Treasure DIY I made earlier this year and the little cabinet is from a yard sale from before I was even married. I love that little cabinet. It cost me $20 way back.  I store all of the kids workbooks and binders in there.

Homeschool Room Reveal 7 Homeschool Room Reveal

The chairs were a FB Marketplace find and I got 4 for $20 each and they were basically brand new.

And of course I had to sprinkle some Christmas touches here and there.

Homeschool Room Reveal 6 Homeschool Room Reveal

This room was truly so much fun to put together. I really tried to make it cozy and comfortable, but also encourage them to learn.

For the limited amount of money that I had to put this together, I think I did pretty well in pulling this off.

Homeschool Room Reveal 9 Homeschool Room Reveal

I am so happy with this space. The kids love it as well and really that is all that matters.

If you have limited resources for a homeschool space, consider what you already have and what you can find second hand that can function for your space. Pull things from other rooms that you can use and don’t worry if everything is not perfect.

It’s all about the environment and mood you create. The rest is just material stuff.

I hope you found a little inspiration today! I will see you in the next one.

Until then… adios!

Calming Master Bedroom Makeover

Calming Master Bedroom Makeover

*The following post is sponsored however, all opinions are my own. Some of the following links below are affiliate links. For more details please see full disclosure*

With the weather getting warmer here now, my husband and I will start renovating our home at a faster rate. We hope to take advantage of the nicer weather outside to get a lot more projects completed. If you have been following me on Instagram you know there is a lot more going on than just home renovation and your messages and support are always so kind. Thank you.

With so many projects up ahead I realized that in order to be able to complete them (and stay sane ?) I needed a place to retreat to and wind down at the end of the day. A place where I can go to relax and recharge for the next day of work. And unfortunately I did not have one.

Behold my very sad master bedroom.

Master BEFORE 1 Calming Master Bedroom Makeover

We literally moved in and planted our furniture in the space. The only thing that changed was the carpet (yep, the one that sent me to the hospital, remember that?).

Master BEFORE 3 Calming Master Bedroom Makeover

It was boring and it had golden walls. I hadn’t made an effort to put any decor up and each corner had little bits of clutter here and there. Frankly, at the end of the day I was just too tired and since no one ever saw our bedroom, it remained neglected.

Master BEFORE 5 Calming Master Bedroom Makeover

I am not going to lie, sharing these images on here is a little embarrassing, but even us DIYers often have these “dirty little secrets”.

Master BEFORE 6 Calming Master Bedroom Makeover

I literally had a moving box (unpacked) by the door. Yep!

Master BEORE 2 Calming Master Bedroom Makeover

It was pretty bad and I had to do something about it before we continued on with our renovations. So I came up with the following mood board for the room.

I knew I wanted calm colors for the space and I wanted to create a brick accent wall. But I couldn’t do real brick since I was on a strict budget. However, I still wanted to get the look. I also needed to keep my all white bedroom furniture (again budget) so I had to darken the walls a bit to balance it out.

Below was my vision and I was really looking forward to getting started.

While I was actually making plans for this space the opportunity to work with Purple became available and I was beyond excited! We love Purple mattresses. As a matter of fact, we purchased one a couple of years ago and talked about it on our channel.

We had purchased the original purple mattress and it has done very well for us, but now there are so many options as far as mattresses go. These beds are like no other and give you the best sleep. They have the most unique design and technology behind them.

Here are some fun facts…

Purple was started by 2 brothers: an actual rocket scientist and a tech comfort genius. They originally began their work to develop better cushions for wheelchairs. It soon evolved into more comfortable medical beds and then finally they were able to bring the comfort right home to you and me.  Their hyper elastic gel grid technology is what makes this mattress so unique.

This mattress’s special grid offers durability, cooling features that prevent you from getting too hot at night, and giving you maximum support without the unnecessary pressure. The best thing about it is that it takes care of all our sleeping needs (even if my husband and I have different preferences on comfort).

Screen Shot 2021 04 26 at 11.42.32 PM Calming Master Bedroom Makeover

The Purple 4 is so much thicker than our last mattress.  We decided to go with the Purple 4 because my husband is big guy who sleeps on his side snuggled with a ton of pillows (don’t tell him I said that). I am less “high maintenance” and prefer to sleep on my back, however, there is one thing we both love and that is feeling like we are sleeping on a cloud. As time goes by we both have come to appreciate softer surfaces to rest on.

The Purple 4 provides us with just that. And while the original is still a great mattress, the difference in “lightness” is significant. It’s sturdy, yet soft at the same time.

The original is a comfortable mattress, but is more firm. The Purple 4 gives me the support I need sleeping on my back while making it extremely comfortable for my husband to sleep on his side. We wake up even more rested now (the only reason it can be hard to get out of bed, is because we are so comfortable in it).

It features a nice sleek look with a smooth quilted exterior.

Their pillows also feature their hyper elastic gel grid technology!

IMG 1395 scaled Calming Master Bedroom Makeover

And not only do they have mattresses and pillows, but they have the most amazing soft stretchy sheets.  They come in several different colors now which makes this “neutral loving” lady so happy.

If you haven’t tried out Purple or wish to get more information on their sleep options, definitely check out Purple to see everything they have to offer. We even included more information in our video below!

BELOW you can watch how we transformed our new master bedroom STEP by STEP!

Everything we used to make this space is included in the description box of the video above including paint colors, tools etc.

Here is what the room looks like now…

So much better!

That my friends is a faux brick wall made from these panels you can by at your local hardware store. They look so real you would NEVER guess they weren’t. The full step by step instructions are in the video above.

And can we talk about those walls? They are no longer golden!

The color is Clean Slate by Magnolia.

Master Bedroom AFTER 6 Calming Master Bedroom Makeover

I solved the small clutter issue by adding several storage pieces to the room in order to gather all the knick knacks. This allowed me to keep the room pretty simple.

Master Bedroom AFTER 5 Calming Master Bedroom Makeover

And then I made sure to add tons of layers of sheets and comforters on top of my new mattress so that it had that luxury hotel feel. My husband thinks it’s a bit much (LOL), but it feels like heaven!

Master Bedroom AFTER 4 Calming Master Bedroom Makeover

I created a sitting area where the huge armoire used to be.

My husband wants to leave it out of the bedroom and I am not sure I am convinced yet so we will see how that goes. ?

Master Bedroom AFTER 3 Calming Master Bedroom Makeover

I added soft linen looking curtains on both sides of the window to soften the brick wall up. The walls are still a little bare but I hope to add some pieces to make it more homey. Right now I am just enjoying that brick wall.

Master Bedroom AFTER 2 Calming Master Bedroom Makeover

I did bring back my DIY sunburst mirror that I created in my last home. It had been in the basement stored all this time and it’s so good to see it back up. That sunburst is one my favorite DIY’s of all time.

Master Bedroom AFTER 1 Calming Master Bedroom Makeover

But look at that wall! It’s my most favorite wall in the house now. The space just looks so different with it. And since my home is completely brick on the outside, the brick wall is not out of place. It feels as if it was there all along.

My husband was skeptical of it at first, but I think I convinced him. ?

Master Bedroom AFTER Calming Master Bedroom Makeover

And what about all those pillows? They may be a pain to put back on every morning, but it’s so worth it!

The room feels like a getaway now.

What do you think of the new master bedroom? Do you like the changes? What do you think I should add to the bare walls? Should I bring the armoire back? Inquiring minds want to know….

One thing is for sure, I am so happy that I now have a space for my husband and I to relax. And we are so happy we are getting even better rest with our new purple mattress. The combination of better sleep and a calming space makes for a better wake up in the morning.

Don’t forget to check out more on all your sleep options here my friends! I cannot wait to enjoy this mattress for years to come.

Wishing you all sweet dreams….

I will see you back here soon!

Until then… adios!
