Valentines Day Wreath High End Dupe

Hey there friends! Today I am bringing you another Valentine’s Day DIY.

In order to keep in line with my theme from my last Valentine’s Day post where I shared I just want to make useful creations for my home that won’t clutter my space, I thought I would create a wreath that I could hang on my front door, but not “scream” Valentine’s Day only.

I saw this wreath on Grandin Road and I thought it was darling! I liked how it was made of greenery and could be used longer than just for Valentine’s Day. However the price was a bit much so I decided to make one myself.

I could not find any heart shaped wire wreath forms at Dollar Tree this time around so I decided to use what I had on hand. I traced and cut out a large heart form from some poster board using my favorite box cutter.

Next, I covered the entire heart in jute twine. This gave it more strength and made it look a lot nicer too (in case there were any peeks through the greenery.)

For the greenery I used the eucalyptus bushes from Wal Mart. They carry the small ones for under $1 and some larger ones for about $3. I used a combination of both since they are a slightly different color and would give the wreath nice dimension.

I removed each of the stems individually with a wire cutter and hot glued them onto the wreath form. I placed them with the stems facing the bottom point of the heart from either side.

I alternated the leaves: some light and some dark and moved my way up to the top of the heart.

This took a bit of time since I was going for a really full heart, but in the end it all came together just the way I had hoped.

I used some neutral striped ribbon from Dollar Tree to hang it and that was it!

High End Valentines Wreath Dupe 8 Valentines Day Wreath High End Dupe

All in all this wreath cost me less than $20 and so much better than the original $100 price tag. The great thing is that I can leave it up longer during Spring so I don’t have to change out my decor as often.

What do you think? I love how it turned out.

This year is quickly flying by and Valentine’s Day will be here before you know it, so today I have something really special for you.

Ya know, the older I get the less knickknacks I want around the house cluttering my space especially for fleeting holidays. While I enjoy making home decor and unique pieces for my home, I want to make more meaningful pieces for my decor. And by meaningful sometimes I mean more challenging.

This year is going to be the year where I test my artistic abilities so I thought why not challenge myself in creating custom artwork for Valentine’s Day.

I love watching people paint and one of my favorite watercolor painters is Ellen Crimi Trent on YouTube. She’s amazing and I hope to one day paint as good as her. She created two beautiful watercolor pieces of art and I thought I would recreate one of them (using my stash of non-professional craft acrylic paint, LOL!)

So here goes..

Valentines Day Wall Art and Printable

I bought some canvases at the Dollar Tree (in their more expensive section). They have 3 packs for $5. I used the largest one of the pack for this.

I gave it one coat of white chalk paint. And when that dried I used a heart doily to trace a heart onto it.

Valentines Wall Art and Printable 1 Valentines Day Wall Art and Printable

Next, I taped off the inside of the heart so I wouldn’t get paint on that portion.

Valentines Wall Art and Printable 2 Valentines Day Wall Art and Printable

Then I just pulled out some of my craft paint and began adding flowers all around. I used light pink, peach and a fuchsia color.

Valentines Wall Art and Printable 3 Valentines Day Wall Art and Printable

I started with roses, made buds and honestly I just kept adding shapes all over the place. I really didn’t know how it was going to turn out.

Valentines Wall Art and Printable 4 Valentines Day Wall Art and Printable

I also added stems and random leaves throughout.

Valentines Wall Art and Printable 5 Valentines Day Wall Art and Printable

I added layers of color, waiting until the paint below dried to add more. Then I continued to fill in all the white space left around the heart.

Once I thought I did enough, I removed the tape.

Here’s how it turned out in the end! I didn’t think it was too bad considering it was my first attempt. And while I am happy I can enjoy this in my home, I figured I would share it with you all!

I adjusted the colors just a bit in order to make a more romantic and upscale look but the quality of the image turned out pretty great!

There is an 8 x 10 version as well as a printable for a Valentine’s Day card for you to use this Valentine’s Day.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters DIY Candlesticks From Old BanistersDIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

*Some of the following links are affiliate links. Please see full disclosure for complete details*

Hello sweet friends! I recently went to South Carolina for a workshop and to meet one of my favorite YouTubers, Debi’s Design Diary. On the days leading up to the trip I told my husband that I wanted to stop by every single second hand, thrift or antique store along the way.

I love thrifting but I will be honest, by the end of last year I was so burned out. And I needed to go and take a fun break and just look at pretty things instead of make pretty things for a change. Of course, I could not help myself and I ended up buying things to DIY anyways. I share more about the trip here.

In one of the shops, I found these cute mini cloches at only 50 cents each so naturally I picked them up. I didn’t have a plan for them right away, but I knew I wanted to incorporate them into some candle holders of some type.

Oh and did I mention, I have a huge announcement in this post? Keep reading to see what it is!

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 14 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

After we came back from our trip I came across a FB Marketplace listing for a couple of banisters a lady was selling for $10 for the pair. I quickly went by and picked them up.

Aren’t they amazing?!

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 1 DIY Candlesticks From Old BanistersMy husband and I had been working with our bathroom renovation and he had his power tools out, so I quickly asked him to cut them down for me. I had him cut them at differing heights.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 2 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

He also cut the bolts off at the bottom of each.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 3 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

I recently purchased this box of wooden rings for another project and decided to use two of them for the tops of the candleholders. This gave it a more finished look (instead of it looking like it had been cut off).

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 4 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

I used some wood glue to adhere them.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 5 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

And I placed something heavy to hold them down while they dried.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 6 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

Since sage is the color of the year, I thought I would go with DIY Paint’s Gypsy Green and on that note…..

I will actually be selling these paints very shortly!

I met Debi last month and she is a fan of my Youtube channel (as much as I am of hers) and she brought up the idea of me selling her paints. After so much deliberation (cause I overthink) and a couple of conversations, I thought I would take the leap of faith. I mean, I talk about her clear wax all the time anyway. LOL!

So right now I am setting up everything behind the scenes so I can get started and sell them in my online shop.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 7 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

Her paint is highly pigmented and is made of only 9 all natural ingredients. Because it is clay based it has amazing coverage and dries with a chalky feel.

It’s great for both small and large projects. And I will even be carrying sample size paints as well for smaller projects like this!

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 8 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

I love the look and feel of it and I cannot wait to show you more from her line.

Now back to the candlesticks… I could have left them with one coat, but I went ahead and did a second since the banister was stained such a dark color to begin with.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 9 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

After they dried I used some of her clear wax (it’s my favorite!) It deepens the color and seals the surface so smoothly.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 10 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

While it was still tacky I sprinkled some of DIY Paint’s white Decrepit Dust and worked it into the paint strokes and all of the nooks and crannies with my brush.

I also incorporated some of the DIY Paint’s white wax to bring out the creases even more.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 11 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

Then I wiped off the excess with clean cloth that was just a little damp. As you can see I also distressed some of the edges a bit. You can see the different after I removed the excess on the bottom part of the candlestick.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 12 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

Next I took some E6000 and applied it to the top rings so that I could adhere the mini glass cloches.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 13 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

I even used a small level to make sure they stuck on straight.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 15 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

And that was it! I think this is probably one of my best DIYs yet!

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 16 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

It’s like the mini cloches were meant for these banister legs! Such a perfect fit. Can you tell these were DIY candlesticks from old banisters?

I think the distressing is just the perfect amount and the white wax gives it an aged look. And I even put felt underneath them to protect my furniture surfaces.

DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters 18 DIY Candlesticks From Old Banisters

What’s even more exciting is that I was able to make these book ends from one of the banister tops as well! And I still have more banister pieces left to make more projects!

If you are interested in how I made these, you can watch how I made these here.

Simple & Elegant Winter Wreath

Winter Wreath 1 Simple & Elegant Winter Wreath

Simple & Elegant Winter Wreath

*Some of the following links are affiliate links. Please see full disclosure for complete details*

Can you believe it is already 2022?! The more the years go past the faster they seem to go. This year will be super special though. For one thing, this year I turn 39 (before the end of the month actually). It’s my last year in my 30’s and I really want to make it a good one.

There are many things I want to do and a lot of goals I have set for myself by the end of this year. Let’s see if I can accomplish everything I have planned!

But as for now let’s get to creating something beautiful for this winter season. I don’t know about you, but I get a little sad when I take down all of my Christmas decorations. Everything seems so plain and empty, so it’s nice to add little touches here and there to cozy up our home for the remaining months.

*Scroll to the end for even more simple and elegant winter decor ideas!*

I love creating wreaths so I thought I would try one that looks like a winter sweater (no knitting required).

First, you will need yarn, and I picked this one up at Hobby Lobby at 30% off.

Winter Wreath 3 Simple & Elegant Winter Wreath

Next, you will need a round wire wreath form. I wanted a large thick wreath so I actually zip-tied 2 of them together.

Winter Wreath 4 Simple & Elegant Winter Wreath

I spray painted it white. This part is optional, but I do think it makes a difference since you may see some of the wire peek through the yarn and it would be less noticeable if it were white.

Winter Wreath 7 Simple & Elegant Winter Wreath

Once it is dry it is time to measure your yarn length. You want to wrap it around the wreath and then about 1/4 more of the length of the wreath (marked by the red arrows). The reason you need to add length is because we will be braiding the yarn which will cause the total length to shrink.

Doing this will make sure you have enough slack to make it all the way around.

Winter Wreath 6 Simple & Elegant Winter Wreath

Tape 3 pieces down and begin to make a simple braid.

RELATED: Valentine’s Wreath

Winter Wreath 5 Simple & Elegant Winter Wreath

Next, use some hot glue and start adhering the braid to the outside perimeter of the wreath and work your way until you come back to the start.

When you reach the other end simply get it as close to the beginning piece and fold downwards onto the wreath to hide the ends. The yarn is so fluffy you won’t be able to tell when the yarn ends or starts.

Winter Wreath 8 Simple & Elegant Winter Wreath

After the first row, start the second. In order to add contrast I applied the braid in the opposite direction so there is an opposing pattern.

Winter Wreath 9 Simple & Elegant Winter Wreath

Finally glue your last braid onto the wreath.

Winter Wreath 10 Simple & Elegant Winter Wreath

Now it’s time to add some greenery. I used some picks from Hobby Lobby’s Christmas clearance sale.

Winter Wreath 11 Simple & Elegant Winter Wreath

Finally, make a bow the color of your choice. I picked a white and burlap combination since I prefer neutral colors especially for winter. Glue it on and you are done!

Winter Wreath 12 Simple & Elegant Winter Wreath

And here is how it turned out!

Winter Wreath 14 Simple & Elegant Winter Wreath

I love how it turned out! It feels wintery, yet cozy at the same time.

Winter Wreath 13 Simple & Elegant Winter Wreath

I think all of the colors blend together so well and the fact that it’s not knitted even though it reminds me of a cozy sweater is a bigger bonus. I would love to learn to knit, but honestly haven’t gotten the time.

Maybe I should add that as a goal too. LOL!

I would love to know what you think and if you think anyone would enjoy this lovely wreath, please share this with your friends!

DIY Snow Globe for Christmas

DIY Snowglobe for Christmas

This year I am changing up my Christmas decor up and I am enjoying creating new DIYs for this season (keeping things budget friendly of course).

There are so many things in stores right now that are just beautiful and most of the time we want “all the things.” And yet this makes us forget that some of the simplest things can be the most enjoyable.

And just like that this cute little glass globe caught my eye at Target’s dollar spot for only $5.

DIY Snowglobe for Christmas 1 DIY Snow Globe for Christmas

It’s nice and heavy and both pieces are glass. Since I am going for a more formal and traditional feel for Christmas, I thought I would paint the bottom.

DIY Snowglobe for Christmas 2 DIY Snow Globe for Christmas

I used this antique brass spray paint and gave it a couple of coats.

DIY Snowglobe for Christmas 3 DIY Snow Globe for Christmas

Once it was dry I got some floral foam that I had on hand and cut it to fit inside.

DIY Snowglobe for Christmas 4 DIY Snow Globe for Christmas

Then I cut a piece of white cloth. I get these from Dollar Tree in the automotive section and they are so soft.

DIY Snowglobe for Christmas 5 DIY Snow Globe for Christmas

I covered the foam with the cloth and inserted it into the globe base.

DIY Snowglobe for Christmas 6 DIY Snow Globe for Christmas

Next, I took a couple of Dollar Tree Christmas trees and glued them onto a small piece of white round poster board to keep them sturdy.

I placed them on the foam and then added some fake snow around the base and put the globe back on.

I added a navy blue ribbon to it and it was done! I love how simple it is yet how chic it turned out. It didn’t take much to personalize it and now I have a new piece of decor that I can enjoy that did not cost much at all to make.

It’s so sweet and elegant, my only regret is not getting another one.

If you have been following along on my Youtube channel you know that we just started our homeschool journey this year (completely unplanned) but it’s been a great change for my family.

I am so happy I get to teach my children on our own time and curriculum. The flexibility and informal setting has been great, but I still wanted an area that was dedicated to learning.

We first started out in the dining room, but I will admit, it was driving me crazy. There was too much chaos and having to remove everything off the table at the end of the day to eat dinner…. sucked.

However, in our much smaller home, I had to get creative when searching for a space.

Our home is a little older and when we first saw the home we noticed it had quite a unique layout. The stairs to the second floor take you to a landing that’s quite open, but not much can really be done with the space.

It’s too large to leave it without furniture, but too small to create a living space or media room.

(original listing image)

We hadn’t done much in the space since we moved in, but we did get that nasty carpet replaced as soon as we moved in. It was so gross, it literally sent me to the hospital.

(original listing image)

As you can see from this angle, the area is a little awkward.

Since moving in, I had been using the space for my crafting and video editing. I had a table by the window to film my DIYs  and then the desk to the left is where I edited.

I am not going to lie…. it was not pretty.

Homeschool Room BEFORE Homeschool Room Reveal

However, now that I have my Youtube studio, this space is open and I thought it was the perfect opportunity to create a dedicated space for my kids to utilize.

So this is how I transformed the space!

You can watch the entire process in the video below:

The first thing I did was sell the bookcase, move the desk further down the space and paint the walls. My husband also added casing around the window to match the rest of the house. We only have one more window to do in the entire house and then we will be done with all the window molding.

You can read how to add window molding here.

I needed bookshelves to hold all of the kids books and some supplies and I purchased these 2 on Facebook Marketplace for only $10 each. They had great bones, but I wasn’t too fond of the color.

DIY Painted Bookcases 1 Homeschool Room Reveal

I gave them a makeover and shared the process in my last post. They look so much better now.

Homeschool Room Reveal 4 Homeschool Room Reveal

Next, I needed a work surface for the kids so I decided to use the table that I used for crafting. I no longer needed it since we found a free desk on FB Marketplace for my Youtube studio.

You can see that desk and how I transformed it here.

Homeschool Room Reveal 5 Homeschool Room Reveal

As soon as you come up the stairs you walk right into this space so I thought I would add a mirror right above the right bookcase so that it could at least resemble more of a foyer set up instead of a homeschool bookshelf.

Homeschool Room Reveal 3 Homeschool Room Reveal

The bench under the window is an old bench that used to be in the foyer of my last house. The carpet is from Boutique Rugs and this one is called the Pittsview.  I love their quality rugs and I have purchased from them several times.

They were my sponsor for the video I shared above and right now they have a Black Friday sale going on where you can get 65% off plus free shipping!  I give a lot more details about Boutique Rugs in my video and if you are looking for a rug now is the time for huge savings!

Homeschool Room Reveal 10 Homeschool Room Reveal

The curtains are from Plow & Hearth. I had them in my living room, but since I changed the curtains out for Christmas, I brought these up here.

The map is a Trash to Treasure DIY I made earlier this year and the little cabinet is from a yard sale from before I was even married. I love that little cabinet. It cost me $20 way back.  I store all of the kids workbooks and binders in there.

Homeschool Room Reveal 7 Homeschool Room Reveal

The chairs were a FB Marketplace find and I got 4 for $20 each and they were basically brand new.

And of course I had to sprinkle some Christmas touches here and there.

Homeschool Room Reveal 6 Homeschool Room Reveal

This room was truly so much fun to put together. I really tried to make it cozy and comfortable, but also encourage them to learn.

For the limited amount of money that I had to put this together, I think I did pretty well in pulling this off.

Homeschool Room Reveal 9 Homeschool Room Reveal

I am so happy with this space. The kids love it as well and really that is all that matters.

If you have limited resources for a homeschool space, consider what you already have and what you can find second hand that can function for your space. Pull things from other rooms that you can use and don’t worry if everything is not perfect.

It’s all about the environment and mood you create. The rest is just material stuff.

I hope you found a little inspiration today! I will see you in the next one.

Until then… adios!

Painted Bookcases For Our Homeschool Space

EASY DIY Painted Bookcases For Our Homeschool Space

*This post is sponsored by KILZ® Brand but the content and opinions expressed here are my own. Some of the following links are affiliate links. Please see full disclosure for more information*

I cannot believe it is already the end of October! It seems like summer was just here and we started on our homeschool journey. A few months in and things are going great! We have been really enjoying our new routine.

The only thing I still need to work on is our homeschool space. I really want a space that is inviting and fun for the kids yet blends seamlessly with the rest of the house. One of the things I needed to tackle was storage space for books and I was finally able to make some progress on that front.

Over the summer, I came upon a couple of bookshelves on FB Marketplace for only $10 each. They needed an update, but they were in good condition and had great bones.

DIY Painted Bookcases 1 Painted Bookcases For Our Homeschool Space

As you know, I love giving furniture pieces makeovers so I was eager to give these bookcases a fresh look even though they were just simple bookcases. Sometimes it can be easy to overlook simple pieces like this when they are listed online. Even though they don’t have intricate design elements they can still make an impact in any room. Plus, they are functional pieces for storage and that’s a double bonus!

Now, these bookcases are pretty dark so one of the most important things I needed to consider was using a good primer to cover the dark color, especially since I was going to lighten it up. I also wanted to make sure the paint treatment would last, because after all, this was going to be used by kids.

I have used  KILZ® Primer in the past with previous furniture projects and it has always worked great so it was a no-brainer that I would use it for this project as well!

DIY Painted Bookcases 2 Painted Bookcases For Our Homeschool Space

For this go-around I used  KILZ® All Purpose 2 Primer easily found at your local hardware store.

This primer is great for blocking medium stains including minor water stains, rust, grease, ink and even marker. It’s ideal for changing colors and reduces the number of coats of paint necessary to complete a project. KILZ® All Purpose 2 works both for interior and exterior applications and it can be applied on surfaces such as wood, drywall, plaster, paneling, masonry, and even metal.

Another great feature is that it works with oil and water-based paints so it gives you flexibility.

DIY Painted Bookcases 3 Painted Bookcases For Our Homeschool Space

Application is easy. First, I made sure that the bookcase surfaces were clean. Then, I used a small angled sash brush as well as a 4 inch foam roller to apply the primer.

DIY Painted Bookcases 4 Painted Bookcases For Our Homeschool Space

Applying the primer is simple. I like to use the angled brush to get in all of the nooks and creases first and then I roll over everything to make it smooth with the roller.

When applying it on long surfaces, I like to roll the roller from one end of the piece to the other. This helps ensure a nice smooth application straight across.

And I make sure to get every single last part of the bookcases. If it was getting painted, it was getting primed!

DIY Painted Bookcases 5 Painted Bookcases For Our Homeschool Space

Now, if you ever use primer and notice that the primed piece looks a little streaky or uneven – this is perfectly normal. As long as it is covered, it is fine!

Just make sure it is completely dry before you move onto the next step!

DIY Painted Bookcases 6 Painted Bookcases For Our Homeschool Space

Once the bookcases were dry I was ready to paint!

I have been liking more earthy and warm tones lately when selecting my colors. I really love Solid Wood from Magnolia Home by Joanna Gains®. It’s like a mushroom color (at least that’s what it looks like to me).

So I used this paint for the bookcases. I use the same angled sash brush for the creases and nooks, but for the roller, I prefer to use a Wooster Pro 4 inch roller for smooth surfaces. It gives the painted surface a smoother finish in my opinion.

It’s the same roller I use for my kitchen cabinets as well.

DIY Painted Bookcases 7 Painted Bookcases For Our Homeschool Space

The second difference is that I always apply two coats of paint no matter what. For me, this is imperative as this ensures that the surface is completely covered.

DIY Painted Bookcases 8 Painted Bookcases For Our Homeschool Space

I let the second coat dry for at least 24 hours so that the paint could properly cure. Then, it’s all about the decorating!

I used mostly books and things I had on hand, but I was able to get a few fun accessories to make the space for fun.

We are slowly adding more books to our collection, but I think we have a great start!

DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments

Hi friends! It is the most wonderful time of the year! I’m enjoying the colder weather along with cozy nights by the fire.

This year I wanted to change up my Christmas decor, and I wanted some unique pieces. But I also wanted to do it in a budget-friendly manner. So I thought I would create some new ornaments myself.  And I got to try a new craft that I had never done before.

I had seen several DIYers use IOD molds and air clay before and the first person I saw who used this was Debi at Debi’s Designs Diary.  She has done many tutorials on her Youtube channel and she has an online shop so I thought I would finally give them a try.

I have been really inspired by old world home decor lately. And I came across these frame molds that were just adorable. I also purchased a couple of packets of air dry clay ( I only used 1 for this project).

DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments 1 DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments

It took me a few tries to get the hang of it, but I quickly caught on and it was super simple to do.

Before you start make sure to dust the molds with cornstarch so the clay doesn’t stick.

Then, roll the clay in your hands to get it warmed up and loose.

Once it’s more malleable push the clay into the molds.

DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments 2 DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments

Once I made sure everything was pressed down evenly, I used a thin scraper to remove the excess from the mold.

DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments 3 DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments

Then, I removed the mold by peeling it away from the clay frame.

The frames need a good amount of time to dry, so set the frames aside at least 24 hours to dry completely.

Please note: My frames didn’t crack as they dried, but I noticed they did shrink a tiny bit.

DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments 4 DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments

Afterwards, I took gold acrylic paint. I used the Treasure Gold paint by Folkart because it is highly pigmented and it has a vintage tone to it.

DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments 5 DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments

As the frames dry you can find landscape (or any type) prints online that you may like to use. There are a ton of free printable options on Pinterest. You can print them out in tiny sizes so that they may fit inside the tiny frames. Then you cut them down to fit each one.

Please note: You can always hand paint this if you wish, or you can also use family pictures for this as well.

DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments 6 DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments

I then used matte Mod Podge to apply the prints onto the frame. First, I applied some one the middle section of the frame…

DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments 7 DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments

Then I added the print and applied more Mod Podge on top of it to seal it.

DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments

Once they were dry I got some ribbon and used clear craft glue to adhere it to the back of each ornament so I could hang them.

Please note: Hot glue will not work for this.

DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments 8 DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments

And that was it! I love how they turned out. They are so unique and add so much character to the tree.

DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments 9 DIY Vintage Frame Ornaments

I love the various shapes and sizes they come in. They can also be painted to suit any color scheme and can be given as keepsake gifts for the holidays as well.

How To Update Old Pumpkins

Update Old Pumpkins How To Update Old Pumpkins

*Some of the following links are affiliate links. Please see full disclosure for complete details*

Every year around this time we take out our fall decor and spruce our homes bringing in change. And all throughout stores there are so many beautiful things we can buy to add on to our current home decor. The thing is that it’s nice to follow new trends and change things up. But it’s also nice to save money. So how can we do both?

Revamp your outdated decor!

Yep! Mind-blowing, I know. 🤪

But it really is so easy and even fun, plus you save money so why not?!

Just look at the image below. These are some of the pumpkins I used to decorate this year. They are old and outdated pumpkins that I revamped to bring in a new look for fall this year. And it didn’t cost me more than $5 of supplies I already had in my stash.

Update Old Pumpkins 16 How To Update Old Pumpkins

So here is what I did… I took out some old pumpkins that I wasn’t using. This one is actually a Halloween one, but I don’t decorate the inside of the house for Halloween.

Full disclosure, my house is decorated for Christmas in October. #YouTubelife

You can always visit my channel and subscribe here.

Update Old Pumpkins 1 How To Update Old Pumpkins

I had some yarn from Dollar Tree. I found these a few weeks ago and I really liked their colors and their quality. The store has really stepped up.

Update Old Pumpkins 2 How To Update Old Pumpkins

So the first thing I did was remove the stem and make a hole on the top and bottom of the pumpkin.

Then, I began cutting small bunches of yarn and applying them with hot glue. I cut the ends and wrapped them over and into the inside of the pumpkin, tucking the ends away.

Then I just repeated. I kept adding little bunches making sure to keep the yarn straight and covering the parts of the pumpkins that protrude outward.

Update Old Pumpkins 4 How To Update Old Pumpkins

Once most of the pumpkin was covered and all that was left to cover was the inside creases I began creating braids out of the bunches of yarn.

Update Old Pumpkins 5 How To Update Old Pumpkins

And then I added them to the areas where the creases were still exposed.

Update Old Pumpkins 6 How To Update Old Pumpkins

Finally, when the pumpkin was complete, I took the glue gun and inserted it at the top. Most of the yarn had covered the hole and the heat helped open it back up so that I could put the stem back in.

Update Old Pumpkins 7 How To Update Old Pumpkins

After I put the stem back, I was done!

Update Old Pumpkins 8 How To Update Old Pumpkins

Perfection! I love the added detail of the braids. And the green color is so pretty and fresh.

Plus the yarn and braids give it a cozy feel.

Update Old Pumpkins 9 How To Update Old Pumpkins

It goes perfectly with the rest of the pumpkins I updated also.

Update Old Pumpkins 17 How To Update Old Pumpkins

As well as the topiary I just created which I shared here.

DIY PUMPKIN TOPIARY 10 How To Update Old Pumpkins

I tried so many different techniques to update some more of my pumpkins.

Here I used sticky beading from Dollar Tree and raffia from a hula skirt.

Update Old Pumpkins 10 How To Update Old Pumpkins

I decided to stencil this one. The stencil bled a bit, but it kinda gave it a water color feel.

Update Old Pumpkins 11 How To Update Old Pumpkins

I used a two-tone yarn for this small pumpkin and a mini gourd for the stem.

Update Old Pumpkins 12 How To Update Old Pumpkins

And I used chenille yarn for this one and wrapped it horizontally to give it a different look.

Update Old Pumpkins 13 How To Update Old Pumpkins

I added some lace to another.

Update Old Pumpkins 14 How To Update Old Pumpkins

And for this one I used Dollar Tree, rub on transfers. There really are so many options!

Now I have a huge assortment of pumpkins and I didn’t have to buy anything new! Total win in my book!

DIY Pumpkin Topiary

*Some of the following links are affiliate links. Please see full disclosure for complete details*

Hey friends! Every couple of months my dear friend Courtney at Creative on the Cheap hosts a Mystery Box Challenge on her channel and invites several YouTubers to join in on the fun.

This is what the challenge entails. We shop for another Youtuber and we are supposed to buy things we can DIY with. Courtney picks the store we shop at and in that box we are supposed to have 8-10 items and 2 “challenge” items. The challenge items are things we wouldn’t normally craft with (nor would want to).

This month we were to shop at Wal Mart and we were to include 2 challenge items. Plus, this month there was a twist. We were to send them an unfinished DIY project that we never finished ourselves so that they could complete it.

We are to film ourselves opening the box for the first time so we can capture our reactions as we see the items (they are hysterical). You can watch the entire video unfold below.

In today’s post, I will be sharing one of the six DIYs I created from the box, so I hope you enjoy!

Natalee from Designed to the Nines, sent me my box and among the things in it was a new large pumpkin, a pumpkin she tried to DIY previously (her unfinished item), some rope and a tension rod (one of the challenge items) as well as a greenery bush. I will be using all of these to create my topiary.

As you can see the unfinished pumpkin had words painted on it which I chose to paint over with one of my favorite chalk paint colors, Sandstone. I used it on these candleholders as well.

DIY PUMPKIN TOPIARY 1 DIY Pumpkin Topiary

Afterwards, I added some metallic green paint to the top with a sponge brush. The other new pumpkin that Natalee had sent me also had this detail and I wanted to tie the two together.

DIY PUMPKIN TOPIARY 2 DIY Pumpkin Topiary

While that dried, I started working with the rope. I like getting these gift boxes at Dollar Tree often because I am always using them to make planter crates. They are perfect for them.

I thought I would wrap the rope around it to create a square basket.

DIY PUMPKIN TOPIARY 3 DIY Pumpkin Topiary

It took quite a bit of patience and the entire rope, but I wrapped it completely.

DIY PUMPKIN TOPIARY 4 DIY Pumpkin Topiary

Next I took apart the tension rod. I only needed one of the pieces. This rod would hold my topiary in place.  I also added some floral foam to the basket and secured with hot glue.

DIY PUMPKIN TOPIARY 5 DIY Pumpkin Topiary

Afterwards, I removed the pumpkin stem from the larger pumpkin and then I took my hot glue gun and melted holes on the top and bottom of it. This would help the rod go through easier.

DIY PUMPKIN TOPIARY 6 DIY Pumpkin Topiary

I inserted the rod the larger pumpkin and down into the floral foam.

In order to fill in the gaps underneath the pumpkin, I used stems from the greenery bush.

DIY PUMPKIN TOPIARY 8 DIY Pumpkin Topiary

Then I did the same thing with the green pumpkin.

DIY PUMPKIN TOPIARY 9 DIY Pumpkin Topiary

I used the large pumpkin’s original stem on the green one and that was it! The topiary was complete!

I love how it turned out! Who would have thought that these were random items that were sent to me in a box?!?!?

It looks perfect in front of my fireplace. What do you think?

I will say sometimes this Mystery Box can be extremely challenging and sometimes projects like these make it all worthwhile. This is definitely a keeper!

As always share with your friends and don’t forget to check out the rest of the video to see what else I got in my box…. one word… animal. 😱

Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders

Happy Wednesday friends! Hope you are well. Today is the Look for Less Challenge over on my Youtube channel and I am really excited because it is something that my subscribers really enjoy. So of course, I am sharing my look for less dupe here as well!

If you are not familiar with the Look for Less Challenge, it is where I challenge fellow Youtubers to recreate high end home decor pieces on a smaller budget.

I saw these gorgeous candle holders on Pottery Barn’s website and I instantly wanted to recreate them… because, why not?!

If I were to buy a pair of these I would spend $158 (plus tax)… so let’s see what I come up with.

Screen Shot 2021 09 16 at 9.21.35 PM Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders

I found these larger rings on Amazon. The smaller one is 8 inches in diameter and the larger one is 10 inches. You can always use embroidery hoops for this, however, these are thicker and wider and I thought they would do a much better job at replicating the original ones.

I like to get these dupes as close to the originals as possible so these were a great find for this DIY.

Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders 1 Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders

In my stash, I had these Christmas craft ornaments from a couple years ago. I hadn’t found a reason to use them yet (hoarder, I know). They were 50% off at the time and I thought they would be perfect for the round base to place the candle on.

Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders 2 Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders

I removed the tops with my handy miter sheers.

Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders 3 Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders

And then sanded the edge smooth.

Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders 4 Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders

Next, I had some of this stuff called Edgemate. This is the stuff you iron onto plywood to clean the edges up. We are working on my studio right now and we had some left over from when my husband built the bottom cabinets for my space.

I sliced them in half to make them thinner and hot-glued it onto the perimeter of the round disc, giving it a slight lip.

Tip: If you don’t have something like Edgemate, you can always use an embroidery hoop for this step. They are inexpensive and work well for this.

Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders 5 Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders

I also had scrap pieces of plywood that my husband cut down to these small pieces. These were perfect for the bottom base.

RELATED: Pottery Barn Artisan Vase Dupe

Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders 6 Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders

Next, I used wood glue to adhere the hoops onto the plywood rectangles. I made the rectangles different sizes to complement the different size hoops.

Tip: If you have rough edges on your plywood, use wood putty to fill in the raw edge and sand them to make them smooth.

Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders 8 Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders

If you notice above on the left side of the image, there is a small dowel piece – that small piece is glued on next. It was literally a small scrap piece of dowel that I cut into two pieces.

Finally, I glued the round disc onto the dowel piece and I let everything dry at once.

Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders 9 Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders

After they dried completely, I used black chalk paint to give them one coat of paint. Then after they dried, I used my brushed metal acrylic paint in “brushed black” to give it a more metal look.

Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders 10 Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders

You can see the difference between the flat black chalk paint and the metallic paint below.

Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders 11 Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders

I let that layer of paint dry and that was it! I love how these turned out!

Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders 12 Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders

What do you think?

Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders 13 Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders

I love having both of them in the two different sizes. These are slightly smaller than the originals but no one would really know the difference.

Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders 14 Pottery Barn Dupe Ring Candle Holders

I think we have another amazing Pottery Barn dupe! So how did I do?

I tallied up what I spent for this which includes the hoops and the ornaments and it totaled $17. The paint and scraps I used where not included in this final cost, but you could easily do these for about $25 should you need to buy everything.

Decorating for Fall – Living Room

This is a sponsored post and some of the links below are affiliate links. For more details see my full disclosure here.

Hello everyone! Happy last day of August! Can you believe that Fall is already around the corner?  Well, I am excited to be back to my regular program and I thought I would share an update to my living space along with some fall decorating.

What’s even more exciting is that I have a chance for you all to win an amazing Fall Makeover Giveaway  – the details are at the end of this post (giveaway is now closed-thank you to all who entered).

My living area has been a mash up of random things and frankly I have not shared much of it since I have been a little embarrassed. This is literally my main wall and well… it’s not cute.

Ever since we moved in I have been grateful for a real wood-burning fireplace, but not at all enchanted by the orange brick and unnecessarily high mantel that makes the ceiling feel a lot closer to the ground.

DECORATE FOR FALL 15 Decorating for Fall Living Room

Let’s face it, it was an eye sore and no matter what I did in the space, it always looked awkward. Something else I haven’t liked is having a ridiculously large flat screen.  It sits to the right of the fireplace on top of a low console that just didn’t match the rest of the decor.

It all just needed to go.

DECORATE FOR FALL 13 Decorating for Fall Living Room

So my husband and I gave it an entire makeover! I moved the large flatscreen out, and brought in a smaller one from the basement. Then I sold the console on FB Marketplace, and with the money I purchased paint for the fireplace.

I share all of the fireplace details here.

The room looks bigger and taller now.

DECORATE FOR FALL 14 Decorating for Fall Living Room

Since everything looked so great I took the opportunity to redecorate for Fall along with the help of Plow & Hearth, an online warehouse that has a variety of decor items for your home. They have everything from seasonal decor, accent furniture, to practical outdoor items that make gardening a breeze.

They have a mix of both traditional and more modern items that can be enjoyed by everyone.

I wanted my fall decor this season to not only be beautiful, but practical. Plow & Hearth has this gorgeous new wingback chair this season and I decided to place it by the fireplace. I find it would be a great place to read stories by the fire.

Next to it, I have this gorgeous galvanized ash bucket in copper. It is currently housing my Fatwood firestarter sticks that smell amazing.

Behind that is a hand forged iron fireplace tool set that should stand the test of time. The last one we had kind of fell apart (I think it was more for decorative purposes) so I hope to use this one quite a bit this winter. It is conveniently available in a taller size that helps my husband since he’s a pretty tall guy.

In front of the chair, and anchoring the space, is the most gorgeous rug! This Wakefield border polyester rug is nice and neutral but it brings in so many warm tones that are perfect for this leaf-changing season. It is so soft and plush and the pattern on it is so lovely.

Another addition to the living room is this gorgeous set of nesting tables. Plow & Hearth has a line of reclaimed wood pieces. This wood can range from railroad ties to old buildings so each set is unique.

The tables add warmth and functionality to the space and the metal bases are so sturdy.

I added these beautiful black LED lanterns to each side of the fireplace. The  maple leaf garland is also LED and what’s so nice about the P&H LED pre-lit greenery and lanterns is that you can set them on a timer. They go on for 6 hours and off for 18 hours, so you can set and forget and they will always come on at the same time.

How cool is that!?!?

I removed the secretary desk that was in the corner and the space feel so much larger. I swapped the curtains out for a wheat-colored buffalo check. These curtains are lined and meant to keep the cold out and heat in (or vice versa depending on the season).

I love buffalo check but I didn’t necessarily want the black and white for this room. This is much warmer.

These LED (imitation) wax candles are amazing, the feel like the real deal and the hand forged candlesticks look like something from Hocus Pocus!

I have a beautiful place to stack the wood this winter as well. There is so much joy to be had in this space!

I am enjoying the warmer tones and if you know me I am all about the cooler tones, but something is just taking my soul back to the more traditional look these days. The browns and oranges look so beautiful against the white backdrop.

I sewed a few new cushion covers and added them to my sofa. I decided I would switch out the khaki slipcover for the white one this season.

The striped ones are the new ones, and the cushions with the leaves were from a few years past that I made. They are still holding strong!

After adding a few pumpkins, my space was complete. The tray lays on top of a 40 year old table that used to belong to my parents before I was born. It’s pretty banged up but I thought I would give it a nice home since it was literally in my father’s shed for the last 13 years. I hope to pass it along to one of my kids one day.

Secretary “Cottage” Desk Makeover

Secretary “Cottage” Desk Makeover

This week has been a very productive one and let me say it feels so good.  Today I am sharing my secretary desk from hell. LOL! Yes I said that. This thing gave me a run for my money but I did not stop until I finally was able to finish it.

It has been a while now since I have wanted a secretary like this and I was able to finally pick one up from FB Marketplace. From the start I knew I wanted to give it a make over.  I was not fond of the dark stain and I had seen several online that others had painted lighter and I wanted to try it out for myself.

Here is what it looked like when I purchased it. It had a finial at the top but I removed it from transport and then I ended up liking it without it.

When I first began to redo this desk, I was reached out to by a company who wished to send me a sample of their furniture paint that was a one and done deal. They assured me their paint would need no primer and minimal prep.

Since they had great reviews and many people used it, I thought I would try it out. Unfortunately it did NOT work so well for me. There was severe bleed through with this piece. I am not sure whether it was the paint, the age of the secretary, the type of wood or finish that did this, but it was pretty bad and I had gotten a but frustrated.

I had painted furniture before and always used an oil based primer especially when not using chalk paint and I knew better. But sometimes you just have to try things out and learn.

So after I went through all of that I decided to use my trusty primer to seal all of the bleed-through. This is what I use for my dark furniture before I paint.

Once the primer was dry I sanded everything with an orbital sander to make sure if was nice and smooth. But then came my next mishap.

I tried to use a new spray gun to paint the secretary (thinking it would be quick and give me a smooth finish). While I followed directions it didn’t come out so well. The paint came out super splotchy and uneven everywhere. There were huge globs of paint in sections so I decided to stop.

So here I am trying to sand every detail smooth again.

Oh, the horror. Another life lesson I guess…. just go with what you know… for now.

I used Glidden paint for this project in a semi-gloss (which is great for furniture since it makes it super wipeable). It’s a light gray color.

I used an angled sash brush for the corners and a foam roller for the flat and smooth areas.

I wanted to add a little extra character by adding some beadboard that I had left over from my kitchen renovation and apply it to the back of the shelves.

The Latino Engineer helped me with cutting them and I installed them.

Secretary Desk Makeover 3 Secretary Cottage Desk Makeover

I used liquid nails and a nail gun to install.

Secretary Desk Makeover 4 Secretary Cottage Desk Makeover

One thing you need to make sure when you do something like this, is that the lines match up as you move from one shelf section to another. This will make it look like one solid piece of bead-board instead of 3. Plus the lines lining up will look so much better.

Make sure to caulk all of the edges of the bead-board so that it looks seamless.

Secretary Desk Makeover 5 Secretary Cottage Desk Makeover

I wanted the piece to have a two-toned look so I painted the beadboard white. And while it’s hard to tell in the images, the secretary is painted in 2 different colors.

Finally, I wanted to reuse the old hardware so  I decided to spray paint them black. But then after putting them back on I didn’t like them so I removed them again. This time I spray painted them a copper (hammered) metallic color.

I am so glad I changed them. The black was just too stark.

Then lastly it was time to style. I added a mix of books and things I already had on hand along with some of my previous DIYs.

I love the old key that came with the secretary and the lighter color of the secretary now accentuates the little key.

How many DIYs can you spot here? ?

Leaving the original handles allowed me to keep this makeover really inexpensive.

Secretary Desk Makeover 14 Secretary Cottage Desk Makeover

I removed the doors from the top (but kept them in case I wish to do something with them in the future).

Secretary Desk Makeover 11 Secretary Cottage Desk Makeover

I love the look this secretary has now. It still has that vintage look but it has that nice soft cottage feel. The bead-board gave it that extra detail and it’s completely functional still which is great!

I placed it next to my fireplace and I love the location.

Let me know what you think! I worked on some other items during the time I was remaking this secretary and you are welcome to check them out below.
