Cozy Living Room Makeover
A Cozy Living Room Makeover for a Busy Family
Sometimes a room doesn’t need a complete renovation. It just needs a fresh set of eyes, a better layout, and a few thoughtful changes to make it feel like home again.
That was definitely the case with our living room.
We’ve spent so much time working on the exterior of our home that some of the spaces inside have been patiently waiting for their turn. And with a busy family and two little ones in the house, our living room had slowly become a collection of furniture, baby gear, toys, and everything in between.
It was time for a reset!
And today I’m sharing a peek at how we transformed this space into a cozy, comfortable living room that feels much more intentional—but is still practical enough for everyday family life.
Be sure to watch the video below to see the complete transformation from beginning to end. There are several changes that make SO much more sense once you see how the room looked before!
Starting With a Better Living Room Layout
One of my biggest issues with this room wasn’t necessarily the furniture itself—it was the way everything worked together.
Our previous sectional had been with us for quite a while, and when we moved into this house, we essentially placed our existing furniture where it seemed to fit best.
But the room has an unusual layout.
It’s fairly open, you need to be able to walk around the furniture, and we also have the wood-burning stove to work around. There was even an entire wall that felt disconnected from everything else.
Rather than continuing to decorate around a layout I wasn’t loving, I decided it was finally time to try something completely different.
And that one decision ended up changing the entire feeling of the room.
You can see the old layout—and why it wasn’t working—in the video above.
Sometimes You Have to Empty the Room First
Before I could figure out what the room needed, we removed the baby items and started taking out the larger pieces of furniture.
And yes, this also meant discovering the unbelievable number of crumbs that somehow make their way underneath sofa cushions despite repeatedly telling your children not to eat on the sofa. 😂
With everything cleared away, I could finally see the room differently.
We removed the old rug, thoroughly vacuumed the space, and even took the opportunity to give our wood-burning stove a much-needed cleaning.
It wasn’t exactly the glamorous part of the makeover, but it made such a difference.
Once everything was clean, we could finally start putting the room back together.
Rethinking the Furniture
One of the biggest changes was replacing our large sectional with two smaller sofas.
Because we need to maintain walkways around this room, I didn’t want another oversized sectional dominating the space.
Two smaller sofas gave us much more flexibility.
We paired them with ottomans that can be moved around depending on what we’re doing. They can function almost like chaise lounges when we want to stretch out for movie night, but we can also move them when we need more open floor space.
For a family room, that flexibility has been wonderful.
Our new sofas are from Linsy Home, who partnered with me on this makeover. One of the features that immediately appealed to me was the removable, washable performance fabric.

And yes…
I chose white sofas with little kids. 😅
But there is a reason!
The exterior pieces can be removed and washed, which makes having a light-colored sofa much less intimidating in a house with children. The ottomans also provide hidden storage—something I will happily take anywhere I can get it.
I show you how the sofas go together, how the washable pieces are removed, and how we configured everything in the video.

Making an Empty Wall Feel Personal
Once the larger furniture was in place, I could finally turn my attention to that awkward empty wall.
Instead of filling it with generic artwork, I decided to make it personal.
While unpacking things from our move, I came across one of my favorite older family photos. It was taken when we were still a family of five, and even though our family has grown since then, I still love that photograph.
I used it as the starting point and added individual photos of the kids underneath, including canvases of our two youngest girls.
Suddenly, a wall that had always felt like an afterthought became one of the most meaningful areas of the room.
I also moved an olive tree behind one of the sofas. The greenery helps break up the lighter sofa, curtains, and walls while adding some warmth and life to that corner.
It’s a good reminder that you don’t necessarily have to buy something new every time a space feels unfinished.
Sometimes the perfect piece is already somewhere else in your home.
Decorating for Fall Without Overdoing It
With the main layout complete, I wanted to bring just a little bit of fall into the room.
I didn’t want to cover every surface with pumpkins or completely redecorate for the season.
Instead, I focused primarily on color and texture.
And this is where some of my favorite budget-friendly details came into the makeover.
I recently found a pair of large 24-inch down pillows at Goodwill for just $5.99 each. The inserts were fantastic, but I wanted something different for the covers.
So naturally, I made my own!
I found beautiful striped fabric at Hobby Lobby on sale and used it to create custom covers for the thrifted inserts.
I also had smaller Pottery Barn down inserts that I paired with another piece of fabric from Hobby Lobby. For those, I added a sturdier white fabric to the back and made simple envelope-style pillow covers.
Envelope pillow covers are one of my favorite ways to make custom pillows because you don’t have to mess with buttons or zippers.
Finally, I brought back a pair of orange velvet pillows I found at Goodwill last year.
The combination gave me exactly what I wanted: warm autumn color without making the entire living room scream FALL.
A cozy throw, a tray, and just a few decorative pieces finished everything off.
Shop Your Home Before Buying More
One thing I really love about this makeover is that, aside from the major furniture change, so many of the finishing touches came from things we already owned.
The family photographs.
The olive tree.
The lamp.
Thrifted pillow inserts.
Fabric I already had.
Pillows from a previous season.
Instead of buying an entirely new collection of decorations, I was able to rearrange, reuse, thrift, and DIY many of the pieces that made the room feel finished.
That’s one of my favorite ways to decorate.
A beautiful home doesn’t have to mean constantly replacing everything you own. Sometimes simply moving things around and looking at what you already have differently can completely change a room.
Creating a Home That Actually Works for Your Family
More than anything, I wanted this room to feel like somewhere our family could actually live.
We have kids.
We have babies.
We have movie nights.
Things get spilled.
Pillows get moved.
Furniture gets rearranged.
And that’s okay.
I didn’t want to create a living room that looked beautiful for a photograph but made everyone nervous to actually sit down.
The new arrangement gives us a place to cuddle up together for movies, move the ottomans around when we need them, and have friends and family over without feeling like the room is unfinished.
There are still a few things I’d eventually like to change—and I talk about some of those plans in the video—but this room finally feels pulled together.
And that alone feels like a huge accomplishment.
See the Full Before & After
Pictures are wonderful, but this is definitely one of those makeovers where you need to see the before and after in motion to appreciate how much the room changed.
In the video, you’ll see the original layout, the process of clearing everything out, our furniture assembly, how the new configuration works, the DIY pillow covers, the family photo wall, and all of the little finishing touches that brought the room together.
So if you haven’t watched it yet, grab a cup of coffee and come spend a little time with me!

And while you’re there, I’d love to know what you think of the new layout. Would you have chosen two smaller sofas for this room, or would you have kept a large sectional?
There are still plenty more spaces in our home that I can’t wait to share—including our final kitchen reveal, bathrooms, and even a few spaces you haven’t really seen yet.
So stay tuned. We’re just getting started!
