Dining Room Summer Refresh: How I Created a Cozy Designer Look on a Budget
After months of living with a dining room that felt unfinished, I finally decided it was time to give it the attention it deserved.
Like many family homes, our dining room had slowly become a catch-all space. Between diaper bags, extra pillows, décor waiting for a permanent home, and an unfinished lighting situation, the room wasn’t functioning—or looking—the way I envisioned.
Instead of starting over, I focused on making thoughtful updates that would completely change the feel of the room without blowing the budget.
What I was working with…
One of my favorite decorating tips is to work with what you already own before buying anything new. Here is what I was working with. The drapes left much to be desired. They were an inexpensive solution from Amazon at the time. They don’t necessarily look bad, but they weren’t large enough for the window.
Next issue was the buffet. While I love the style of this piece, it looks really cluttered because the clear glass allows you to see everything that is stored inside. Pieces like this are made for displaying items, but I need it for storage. In this instance, I needed to come up with a solution to hide everything inside without changing the look of the piece entirely.
In case you’re wondering I did NOT have my Christmas decor out this long, it was just a good image that showed the issue with the glass doors.
Another issue I had was the mirror. The mirror is nice, but it didn’t fill the large wall space, and I hung it higher than I wanted.
So here is where I started…

A New Chandelier Makes All the Difference
The dining room had been missing its finishing touch for months because the chandelier from our previous home mysteriously disappeared during our move.
Rather than spending a fortune on a replacement, I found a budget-friendly fixture that had the shape and details I wanted.
It wasn’t perfect right out of the box, but a little champagne bronze spray paint transformed the darker metal accents into a finish that coordinated beautifully with my kitchen lighting.
Sometimes a small customization is all it takes to make an affordable piece look much more expensive. I even added some thrifted lamp shades to it later on that I DIYed.
Custom Window Treatments
One of the biggest upgrades came from installing custom pinch pleat curtains.
I chose a beautiful floral fabric with hydrangeas that feels classic and timeless while adding softness to the room. The double pinch pleats instantly elevated the space, and the heavier fabric created a luxurious look that standard store-bought curtains simply can’t match.
Because the curtains were custom-made for my windows, they finally fit the room properly, making the entire space feel more polished.
Giving My Buffet a Custom Look
I also tackled one of my biggest frustrations with my buffet cabinet.
Since I store seasonal décor inside, I never liked seeing everything through the clear glass doors.
Instead of replacing the cabinet, I applied a reeded glass privacy film to the glass panels.
The transformation was incredible. The cabinet now has the appearance of expensive reeded glass while still allowing light to pass through.
It’s one of those budget-friendly upgrades that makes a piece of furniture feel completely custom.
Smaller Decorating Changes That Made a Big Impact
Once the larger projects were finished, I focused on the finishing touches:
As you might have noticed I swapped out the mirror and added new artwork. I had thrifted this mirror and artwork and wanted to make them work for the space. The first thing I did was paint the mirror a satin black.
The artwork was fine and appropriate for a dining space, but the frames looked too cheap with their current finish.
So I taped them up, and spray painted them a flat back.
Then I came in with my favorite Rub n Buff in European Gold.

And this made everything look so much better together.
Then I tackled a few remaining things:
- Restyling the buffet
- Washing and ironing dining chair slipcovers
- Repairing scratches on the dining table using a furniture repair kit
- Simplifying the tabletop décor
- Bringing in greenery for summer
- Adding a large clock to the opposing wall from the buffet
None of these changes were expensive individually, but together they completely transformed how the room feels.
The Final Result
Today, our dining room finally feels like an extension of the rest of our home.
It’s brighter, more functional, and much more inviting for everyday family meals and entertaining.
This makeover is proof that you don’t need a huge renovation budget to create a beautiful home. Thoughtful DIY projects, custom details, and a willingness to reuse pieces you already own can completely transform a space.
What do you think of the space now? Is there anything you would add or do differently?
I would love to hear your thoughts.

I absolutely love your dinning room! The upgrades you made are wonderful and the curtains are stunning.
Great job!
Thank you very much Kathy!
