Ballard Designs Tree Topper Dupe
Ballard Designs Tree Topper Dupe
One of the things I love the most is decorating for Christmas, but one thing I might love even more is doing it on a budget. Perhaps you enjoy this too.
Every year I look forward to this time and I love looking online at the high end stores like Ballard Designs and Pottery Barn to give me inspiration for my own home. More often than not, I can’t justify making those kinds of expensive purchases so I go without.
Let’s be honest, I have always been pretty frugal, but that hasn’t stopped me from thoroughly enjoying myself when decorating.
I just learned to be creative.
This year, while gathering inspiration I came across tree toppers on the Ballard Designs website. I usually don’t like tree toppers as I can never find the right one. There have been years I have gone without, just because none of them have peaked my interest. However, I came across the one below and I found it rather unique.
Of course, at $79 (on sale) it was still out of my price point so I was determined to make my own… and I knew just where I needed to go – Dollar Tree.

Here is what you will need:
- Dollar Tree Sunburst Mirror (2)
- Dollar Tree Tinsel Tree
- Glue Gun
- Scissors or Heavy duty Cutters
And here is how I did it:
Dollar Tree carries these little trees every year. And as a matter of fact, I used these to previously recreate these Pottery Barn berry trees and they came out wonderfully as well.
This will be the perfect “base” for the topper.
Dollar Tree also carries a variety of sunburst mirrors, however, the ones below were the most ideal for this project since they look so much like the original. You can find these all year long in the home decor section.
First thing you need to do is remove the tinsel from the tree form, then cut the bottom down to fit inside the sunburst.
I found that leaving 4 of the little pegs on the end was the perfect length.

Next, I made sure I knew exactly where I wanted to place the tree inside of the sunburst.
Once I knew where I wanted to place it, I added a ton of hot glue.
First, I adhered one of the sunbursts to the tree.
And then I added hot glue to the other side of the tree and placed the second sunburst to the back of it. Basically “sandwiching” the “cone” in between the 2 sunbursts.

Even though the original was not a double-sided topper, I thought it would be nice to be able to enjoy it from the front and the back. This way no matter what direction you are looking at the tree, you can enjoy the topper as well.
I do recommend taking your time with this. Make sure you add quite a bit of hot glue and hold it down to let everything dry in place. You can even add a little bit of E6000 for an extra hold.
I made sure to line up both sunbursts at the same peaks as well. This way you don’t see any of the black backing when you are looking at one side from the front.
Once the glue dries, that is it! You an add your topper to the top of the tree and enjoy it all season long (without the crazy expense).
The great thing about this is that it is super inexpensive to make. You don’t even need to paint it. However, if you wish to change the color up, you can totally do this as well. You can spray paint it for even coverage or you can add black paint to distress the gold.
Now let’s look at the side by side comparison. The original is on the left at $79 and mine is on the right at $3.75. That’s a savings of $75.45. I think that’s pretty good!
This by far is one of my favorite tree toppers. I am so proud of how it turned out and how easy it was to make. What do you think? Would you try this out? What would you do different?
