My creativity is always at its peak during the holiday season and I love sharing new and fun ideas for the Christmas season. One of the things I enjoy the most is having  beautiful tablescapes.

With this I am always trying to figure out new ways to decorate my dining room table. One of the easiest ways you can do this is by adding new napkin rings. By doing this one thing, you can add so much elegance and uniqueness to your setting.

Some of the really nice “statement” napkin rings can be pretty expensive so I thought I would try to find a way to make my own that would be so hard on the wallet.

So I came up with using Dollar Tree poinsettia florals to create napkin rings, but take them to the next level.  This was part of a Christmas in July video I created and I never got to share these on here. Now, is as good a time as any.

I will insert the video in the post as well so you can see the video process of this tutorial in case you wish to see the step by step in action.

Depending on your place setting you may need only one floral bush from Dollar Tree, but usually you need no more than two.

Besides the floral bushes, you will need two other main supplies for this:

You want to cut them individually and then pull the floral stem completely apart, but you want to keep everything except the bottom plastic greenery base. Keep the stem and the petals.

You’re going to follow the instructions on the Plaster of Paris. Once the mixture is ready you will dip each individual petal in the Plaster of Paris, remove all of the excess and lay them to dry. I like to use a popsicle stick to remove the excess.

I also prefer to use a disposable bowl for the Plaster of Paris.

This can get a little messy, so try to have a covered surface.

When you lay the petals to dry, make sure you lift them that way they don’t dry completely flat. The good thing is the petals are already curved slightly so they will stay in place once you adjust them.

Once they are hardened and completely dry, take the 2 petals of each flower and insert the stem back in through the center hole.

Before inserting it all the way through, add hot glue to the center of the flower. Then pull the stem through. This will pull the hot glue through all of the flower petals and glue them all together.

If you find that this doesn’t work as well, you can always hot glue the two petals together first before inserting the stem. Just make sure to avoid the center hole so you can pull the stem through.

You can always see the process below if at any point this looks confusing.

Next, cut off the extra stem piece and place hot glue on the bottom of the flower.

Finally add your wooden round ring to the base.

Because I am going for a neutral look, I am leaving the rings natural. However, if you wish to stain or paint them, make sure you do that before you do this step.

Once the hot glue dries, you’re done! You have a completely unique and stunning napkin ring.

If you haven’t worked with Plaster of Paris the texture is quite unique. It will feel a little like decoupage in that it stiffens ups but more sturdier.

Sure you can just use this idea and just glue the flowers onto the wooden rings without using the plaster, however, this takes them to the next level. They won’t look cheap or be flimsy.

I feel like sometimes we pull away from doing certain things when crafting because it can seem so time consuming, messy or even a bit difficult. But in my eyes, that is what makes our own creations even more special. Doing that little thing that goes beyond just the gluing of things together.

I think sometimes it’s not always the end product that is so rewarding, but trying and learning a new skill.

I think these look like beautiful small works of art adorning my tablescape so elegantly. I am so proud of how these turned out and I am wondering what else I can use Plaster of Paris  on in order to create more unique pieces for the holidays.

If you have any ideas I would love to know.
