It’s that time again where we get to deck the halls for the Christmas season. As always I like to experiment with new color schemes every year and I like to try new techniques when creating new ornaments.
This year I am going for a classic burgundy and gold theme with velvet and tartan ribbons. I have never done anything like this, but my friend Rachel at Stella Rose Mercantile & Boutique sent me some IOD transfers in order to try out and create some memories with my children. And the prints on those transfers really inspired the look I am going for this year.
I have included a video tutorial for this DIY as well in case you would like to see a video step by step version.
For this DIY you are going to need the following:
- Round Ornament Plaque ( These are less thank $1 each)
- Velvet Ribbon
- Transfers ( You can find a variety here)
- Spray Paint optional)
- Rub & Buff
These are the plaques I had on hand from Dollar Tree for reference. They are not always available so I linked these which are actually cheaper than Dollar Tree and are already white.
Because my plaques already had images on them, I spray painted them a satin white. It only took a couple of coats.
I cut out a transfer that fit perfectly inside of the round plaque.
Once the spray paint dried, I placed the transfer on the plaque. And then I rubbed the transfer onto the surface using the tool it came with.
These transfers go on so seamlessly. Once I was done, I pulled the clear transfer sheet off.

I added rub & buff onto the side edges to give it a more high end and classic feel.
And in order to hang it, I used this gorgeous burgundy velvet ribbon.

I cut it down and sealed the edges by burning them slightly with a lighter so they wouldn’t fray.
And that was it. Super easy, yet it creates such a beautiful outcome. I did a couple of different images to share how they turned out and how they can differ.
There are so many designs and styles that can be highlighted using this same method. Whether you are going with something neutral, classical or even modern. Personally, I am enjoying these vintage inspired ornaments with a classic Christmas take.
