Hey friends! Every couple of months my dear friend Courtney at Creative on the Cheap hosts a Mystery Box Challenge on her channel and invites several YouTubers to join in on the fun.
This is what the challenge entails. We shop for another Youtuber and we are supposed to buy things we can DIY with. Courtney picks the store we shop at and in that box we are supposed to have 8-10 items and 2 “challenge” items. The challenge items are things we wouldn’t normally craft with (nor would want to).
This month we were to shop at Wal Mart and we were to include 2 challenge items. Plus, this month there was a twist. We were to send them an unfinished DIY project that we never finished ourselves so that they could complete it.
We are to film ourselves opening the box for the first time so we can capture our reactions as we see the items (they are hysterical). You can watch the entire video unfold below.
In today’s post, I will be sharing one of the six DIYs I created from the box, so I hope you enjoy!
Natalee from Designed to the Nines, sent me my box and among the things in it was a new large pumpkin, a pumpkin she tried to DIY previously (her unfinished item), some rope and a tension rod (one of the challenge items) as well as a greenery bush. I will be using all of these to create my topiary.
Afterwards, I added some metallic green paint to the top with a sponge brush. The other new pumpkin that Natalee had sent me also had this detail and I wanted to tie the two together.
While that dried, I started working with the rope. I like getting these gift boxes at Dollar Tree often because I am always using them to make planter crates. They are perfect for them.
I thought I would wrap the rope around it to create a square basket.
It took quite a bit of patience and the entire rope, but I wrapped it completely.
Next I took apart the tension rod. I only needed one of the pieces. This rod would hold my topiary in place. I also added some floral foam to the basket and secured with hot glue.
Afterwards, I removed the pumpkin stem from the larger pumpkin and then I took my hot glue gun and melted holes on the top and bottom of it. This would help the rod go through easier.
I inserted the rod the larger pumpkin and down into the floral foam.

In order to fill in the gaps underneath the pumpkin, I used stems from the greenery bush.
Then I did the same thing with the green pumpkin.
I used the large pumpkin’s original stem on the green one and that was it! The topiary was complete!
I love how it turned out! Who would have thought that these were random items that were sent to me in a box?!?!?
It looks perfect in front of my fireplace. What do you think?
I will say sometimes this Mystery Box can be extremely challenging and sometimes projects like these make it all worthwhile. This is definitely a keeper!
As always share with your friends and don’t forget to check out the rest of the video to see what else I got in my box…. one word… animal. ?
I will see you all in the next one!
Until then… adios!
