So I am getting a little bit ahead of myself, but I wanted to get a jump in and share with you some great DIY Christmas decorations using Dollar Tree products because their inventory is truly amazing this year and it’s already out, but it will go FAST so the sooner I share this the better.
I don’t think I have ever been so obsessed with Dollar Tree before, but I am really trying to keep costs down with Christmas this year since we have so much more house to fill up with decorations. And frankly the other “problem” that I have is that I am tired of my current decor and want something new for our “new” home…. (seriously our items ARE SO OLD!) so in the attempt to freshen things up I have turned to Dollar Tree to help me out.
And boy, they have not disappointed this year!
I will be sharing 3 different DIY ideas that you can recreate for very little in your home this holiday season.
If you prefer video I have a complete tutorial you can follow via video at the end or simply click here!

Decorative Star on Stand
Items you will need:
- 2 Large Star Ornaments
- 3/8″ Square Dowel
- Rectangle Wood Plaques
- E600 Glue
- Hot Glue/Gun
- Paint ( I used white chalk paint)
- Sponge Brush
- Miter Hand Saw & Box
- Rubber bands
Simply glue the two stars together back to back to achieve a 2 sided “full” star. At first I used hot glue, but it dried too fast so I had to remove it and some of the glitter came off. So then I used E600 and once the glue was on I pressed the stars together. I used rubber bands to hold the tips in place while the glue dried (you can see it in the video. It worked like a charm!)
Then decide how long you want the dowel to be for the stand. Just place the star on it back and adjust the dowel until you get the desired length. Once you do make a mark for your cut.
Then use a miter saw to cut it diagonally. You want a point like this:
Then simply paint your dowel and the base. I used a white chalk paint and I even used the same paint to add more detail to the star.
Glue the dowel to the base’s center. Once that and the star is completely dry remove the rubber bands and glue the bottom of the star onto the dowel tip.
I used both E600 and hot glue. The E600 was for the strong hold, and the hold glue was for the immediate glue so that it would hold while the E600 dried.
And that’s it! You have a star that you can place anywhere!
2. Miniature Village Lantern
Items you will need:
- 4 Dollar Tree Frames (I used these)
- Dollar Tree Church Ornament
- Fake Snow
- Felt Sheet
- Cardboard
- Miniature Craft Trees
- Hot Glue
I used 4 Dollar Tree frames to create the distressed lantern you see below. I made these lanterns for my Thanksgiving table setting and reused them for this. You can watch a full tutorial on how to make these here.
Cut a piece of cardboard to fit on the inside of the lantern.
Cover the cardboard completely with felt – just wrap it around and glue. I placed a small square in the center to elevate where the church was going to sit, then covered it up with the rest of the felt.
(Ignore the Elmer’s glue! I ended up using the hot glue gun instead and it worked better).
Then put the covered cardboard back in the lantern and get your church ornament and remove the string that hangs it on the tree.
Place the church on the cardboard inside the lantern and add snow around it. I used the snow in the red bag below (from Home Depot):
Then just add little trees and you are good to go!
Lastly…
3. Deer Silhouette Framed Art:
Items you will need:
- 2 Doilies ( I bought this pack and got 32 for $1!)
- Paint
- Buffalo Check paper
- Frame
- Double Sided Tape
- Elmer’s Glue
This was the cheapest one for me coming in at about $0.40 cause I already had most of the supplies.
All I bought was the buffalo check paper from Hobby Lobby and the doilies from Dollar Tree! I ended up using 2 doilies together because as you can see below, they are thin and I didn’t want to see through it, but 2 worked fine.
For the deer I just googled Free Deer Head Vectors online, printed the one I liked, placed the doily over it and used the same fabric paint that I used for my bloody Halloween masks last year to fill in the deer head.
I love how it came out 3D. It reminded me of those old wax stamps people would use to seal letters back in the day.
Once it was dry, I taped the doily onto the buffalo check paper. I used a little bit of Elmer’s glue to glue the edges and then I added the buffalo check to a picture frame I already had. I left the glass out so that you can see the dimension on the deer.
And that was it!
Quick and easy art!

I love the deer head. I would have never thought of doing it in fabric paint.
Thanks Pam! I just grabbed what I had and I actually liked how the fabric paint turned out!

Thank you Cindy! These were actually so much fun to create and yes, they were easy. I am trying so hard not to go back, but I see another trip in the near future!
Thanks for sharing the idea. I think this year we will get a dollar tree for a change.
