Breakfast Chairs Re-Upholstered
My breakfast area chairs were looking a little worn out and just plain dull and since I could not buy new ones, I figured I would go to my FAVE store Hobby Lobby and get some fabric to re-upholster them. This is what they looked like before… YUCK!
They were brown microfiber and over 7 years old. They had stains and some areas were wearing out.
I only needed a yard and a half of home decor fabric, and luckily it was 30% off. So I got a beautiful velvety-bluish fabric with a trellis design on it.
First I removed the cushions, and it was basically removing 4 screws. Easy peasy!
Then I removed the cover which was SO HARD! These chairs had a million staples and took FOREVER! I used the existing covers to cut out the new ones. I folded them in half and placed them along the center of the new fabric. I wanted to make sure their was a complete trellis design in the center.
I pinned both centers with a pin so it wouldn’t move while cutting it (as suggested by my mother-in-law). Worked like a charm!
Here is the completely cut piece of new fabric.
I ended up leaving the foam that was already on the chairs. They were still clean (just yellowed as it tends to do over time). It just needed to be stretched out and re-stapled.
I pinned the fabric around the seat first to make sure it was going to end up like I wanted it.
Then I pinned the corners down to see how I eventually wanted to staple the corners without bunching the fabric up too much (again much kudos to my mother-in-law).
Then when I was ready I stapled the fabric back with a manual staple gun (never again I might add) on the chairs and viola! Instant update!
I have an air-powered staple gun, I will use THAT next time. My palms will thank me….
Also, if you are Latina(o) too you would remember that your aunts, grandmas, cousins, etc. had their furniture covered in plastic so that us kids wouldn’t get them dirty. Well, keeping with that tradition (a little modernized however, since I didn’t staple the plastic ONTO the chairs) I bought these….
You can get a pair of 2 for $9.99 at Bed, Bath & Beyond (but I used two 20% off coupons for both sets). They help with the little ones who still like to spill their juice, soup, you name it all over the place when they eat.
Actually, my kids aren’t THAT messy, but these covers have made some great saves over the past weeks. When they are a little older, I can just take them off!
Here is a comparison of the two.
I ended up spending less than $40.00 on this so I am totally happy with the end result! Beats buying new chairs.
Hope you liked!
